We study continuous-domain linear inverse problems that involve a general data-fidelity term and a regularisation term. We consider a regularisation that is formed by the sparsity-promoting total-variation norm, pre-composed with a differential operator th ...

This paper presents the new 2D electrostatic particle -in -cell code FENNECS developed to study the formation of magnetized non -neutral plasmas in geometries with azimuthal symmetry. This code has been developed in the domain of gyrotron electron gun desi ...

We present a combination technique based on mixed differences of both spatial approximations and quadrature formulae for the stochastic variables to solve efficiently a class of optimal control problems (OCPs) constrained by random partial differential equ ...

The brain is an ultra-soft viscoelastic matrix. Sub-kPa hydrogels match the brain's mechanical properties but are challenging to manipulate in an implantable format. We propose a simple fabrication and processing sequence, consisting of de-hydration, patte ...

The log law of the wall, joining the inner, near-wall mean velocity profile (MVP) in wall-bounded turbulent flows to the outer region, has been a permanent fixture of turbulence research for over hundred years, but there is still no general agreement on th ...

Janus membranes, thin permeable structures with chemical and geometrical asymmetric properties, show great potential in industrial separation processes. Yet the link between the micro- and macro-scale behaviours of these membranes needs to be established r ...

We present a comprehensive review of methods and applications of molecular simulations of interfacial systems. We give a detailed overview of the main techniques and major challenges in the following aspects of solid and fluid surfaces: adsorption at solid ...

Numerical simulations have become an indispensable tool in astrophysics and cosmology. The constant need for higher accuracy, higher resolutions, and models of ever-increasing sophistication and complexity drives the development of modern tools which targe ...

Spherical assemblies of the type [PdnL2n]2n+ can be obtained from PdII salts and curved N-donor ligands, L. It is well established that the bent angle, α, of the ligand is a decisive factor in the self-assembly process, with larger angles leading to comple ...

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an important tool for the simulation of the cardiovascular function and dysfunction. Due to the complexity of the anatomy, the transitional regime of blood flow in the heart, and the strong mutual influence between the ...

We consider the numerical approximation of an optimal control problem for an elliptic Partial Differential Equation (PDE) with random coefficients. Specifically, the control function is a deterministic, distributed forcing term that minimizes the expected ...

The goal of this thesis is the development and the analysis of numerical methods for problems where the unknown is a curve on a smooth manifold. In particular, the thesis is structured around the three following problems: homotopy continuation, curve inter ...

Many scientific inquiries in natural sciences involve approximating a spherical field -namely a scalar quantity defined over a continuum of directions- from generalised samples of the latter (e.g. directional samples, local averages, etc). Such an approxim ...

The largest operating stellarator, Wendelstein 7-X, is of the quasi-isodynamic type. For this design to scale up to a fusion reactor, several criteria must be met, one of them being good fast ion confinement. The latter still has to be tested experimentall ...

Recently, triangle configuration based bivariate simplex splines (referred to as TCB-spline) have been introduced to the geometric computing community. TCB-splines retain many attractive theoretic properties of classical B-splines, such as partition of uni ...

This paper presents structural optimization techniques to design truss structures that make best use of a given stock of structural components. Still little explored, the reuse of structural components over multiple service lives has the potential to signi ...

Electroadhesion endows robots with super-human abilities: mechanical geckoes that climb vertical walls and soft grippers that grasp the most delicate objects. Based on electrostatics, the adhesion forces are turned on and off by an electrical signal, promi ...

This work describes the geometry behind the Smith chart, recent 3D Smith chart tool and previously reported conceptual Hyperbolic Smith chart. We present the geometrical properties of the transformations used in creating them by means of inversive geometry ...

Ecological awareness, pressing climate considerations and rising need for soil stabilization push forward the quest for alternative solutions in geotechnical engineering such as Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation (MICP). Precipitated crystals serv ...

We consider the numerical approximation of a risk-averse optimal control problem for an elliptic partial differential equation (PDE) with random coefficients. Specifically, the control function is a deterministic, dis- tributed forcing term that minimizes ...
