Noise is an intrinsic part of any sensor and is present, in various degrees, in any content that has been captured in real life environments. In imaging applications, several pre- and post-processing solutions have been proposed to cope with noise in captu ...

Photometric stereo, a computer vision technique for estimating the 3D shape of objects through images captured under varying illumination conditions, has been a topic of research for nearly four decades. In its general formulation, photometric stereo is an ...

Anchorage of shear reinforcement, such as links or stirrups, can be performed by providing hooks, bends or heads at their ends, by welding transverse reinforcement or by closing open stirrups with pins. Hooks and bends, also used to enhance the anchorage o ...

In this paper, we use synthetic data and propose a new method for template inversion attacks against face recognition systems. We use synthetic data to train a face reconstruction model to generate high-resolution (i.e., 1024 x 1024) face images from facia ...

The trend towards generalized blended and active learning approaches in engineering education is redefining the requirements and the deployment schemes for digital education platforms. This paper presents a quadriptych techno- pedagogical model highlightin ...

Earth observation (EO) is increasingly used for mapping and monitoring processes occurring at the surface of Earth. Data acquired by satellites nowadays allow us to have a global view, consistent in time, of the state of our forests, oceans, and growing ur ...

Stencil lithography (SL), which uses a perforated membrane as a reusable shadow mask to locally add material patterns on substrates provides a simple but versatile approach for the fabrication of functional devices on a large variety of substrate materials ...

Recent years have seen remarkable advancements in saliency estimation methods, mainly due to deep learning models leveraging the widespread availability of real-world images. However, saliency is profoundly shaped by the intricacies of the human visual att ...

The combination of palladium salts and bipyridyl ligands can lead to the formation of a large variety of coordination complexes, with different shapes and sizes, displaying a very versatile host-guest chemistry. Increasing their structural complexity remai ...

Earth scientists study a variety of problems with remote sensing data, but they most often consider them in isolation from each other, which limits information flows across disciplines. In this work, we present METEOR, a meta-learning methodology for Earth ...

This thesis is constituted of one article and three preprints that I wrote during my PhD thesis. Their common theme is the moduli theory of algebraic varieties. In the first article I study the Chow--Mumford line bundle for families of uniformly K-stable F ...

Predicting wind flow in highly complex terrain like the Alps is a challenge for all models. When physical processes need to be resolved in a spatially explicit manner, grids with high horizontal resolution of a few hundred meters are often required and dra ...

The proliferation of microscopy methods for live-cell imaging offers many new possibilities for users but can also be challenging to navigate. The prevailing challenge in live-cell fluorescence microscopy is capturing intra-cellular dynamics while preservi ...

Super-resolution structured-illumination microscopy (SIM) is a powerful technique that allows one to surpass the diffraction limit by up to a factor two. Yet, its practical use is hampered by its sensitivity to imaging conditions which makes it prone to re ...

Image super-resolution is a classic ill-posed computer vision and image processing problem, addressing the question of how to reconstruct a high-resolution image from its low-resolution counterpart. Current state-of-the-art methods have improved the perfor ...

Cells are essential to understanding health and disease, yet traditional models fall short of modeling and simulating their function and behavior. Advances in AI and omics offer groundbreaking opportunities to create an AI virtual cell (AIVC), a multi-scal ...

Image restoration reconstructs, as faithfully as possible, an original image from a potentially degraded version of it. Image degradations can be of various types, for instance haze, unwanted reflections, optical or spectral aberrations, or other physicall ...

This chapter explores the intersection of generative AI and personalized learning, emphasizing the role of educators and examining the application of large language models (LLMs) in crafting personalized learning paths. The chapter examines the perception ...

Localization microscopy is a super-resolution imaging technique that relies on the spatial and temporal separation of blinking fluorescent emitters. These blinking events can be individually localized with a precision significantly smaller than the classic ...

Polyelemental compounds with dimensions in the nanosized regime are desirable in a large variety of applications, yet their synthesis remains a general challenge in chemistry. One of the major bottlenecks to obtaining multinary systems is the complexity of ...
