The use of model-based numerical simulations of wave propagation in rooms for engineering applications requires that acoustic conditions for multiple parameters are evaluated iteratively, which is computationally expensive. We present a reduced basis metho ...

We introduce a high-order spline geometric approach for the initial boundary value problem for Maxwell's equations. The method is geometric in the sense that it discretizes in structure preserving fashion the two de Rham sequences of differential forms inv ...

Explicit time integration schemes coupled with Galerkin discretizations of time-dependent partial differential equations require solving a linear system with the mass matrix at each time step. For applications in structural dynamics, the solution of the li ...

This thesis is a study of the global well-posedness of the Cauchy problems for half-wave maps from the Minkowski space of dimension n+1 to the 2-dimensional sphere and the hyperbolic plane. The work is mainly based on the results from Krieger-Sire 17' in ...

We consider the idealized setting of gradient flow on the population risk for infinitely wide two-layer ReLU neural networks (without bias), and study the effect of symmetries on the learned parameters and predictors. We first describe a general class of s ...

The conjugate heat transfer in mixtures of a fluid and single granular clusters is studied in this paper using a novel lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) programmed for parallel computation on the graphics processing unit (GPU). The LBM is validated for heat c ...

We study the stability of laminar wakes past three-dimensional rectangular prisms. The width-to-height ratio is set to W/H = 1.2, while the length-to-height ratio 1/6 < L/H < 3 covers a wide range of geometries from thin plates to elongated Ahmed bodies. F ...

We introduce a family of neural quantum states for the simulation of strongly interacting systems in the presence of spatial periodicity. Our variational state is parametrized in terms of a permutationally invariant part described by the Deep Sets neural-n ...

Global spectral methods offer the potential to compute solutions of partial differential equations numerically to very high accuracy. In this work, we develop a novel global spectral method for linear partial differential equations on cubes by extending th ...

The finite element method is a well-established method for the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs), both linear and nonlinear. However, the repeated re -assemblage of finite element matrices for nonlinear PDEs is frequently pointed ...

Nonparametric inference for functional data over two-dimensional domains entails additional computational and statistical challenges, compared to the one-dimensional case. Separability of the covariance is commonly assumed to address these issues in the de ...

This work studies the nearshore hydrodynamics of a shallow turbulent flow entering a laterally unconfined quiescent ambient with a sloping bottom boundary. Examples of such flow are neutrally buoyant ebb tidal jets and hyperpycnal river plumes entering ope ...

We investigate the mechanics of bistable, hard-magnetic, elastic beams, combining experiments, finite-element modelling (FEM) and a reduced-order theory. The beam is made of a hard magneto-rheological elastomer, comprising two segments with antiparallel ma ...

Iterative substructuring Domain Decomposition (DD) methods have been extensively studied, and they are usually associated with nonoverlapping decompositions. It is less known that classical overlapping DD methods can also be formulated in substructured for ...

We study elastic ribbons subject to large, tensile pre-stress confined to a central region within the cross-section. These ribbons can buckle spontaneously to form helical shapes, featuring regions of alternating chirality (phases) that are separated by so ...

The alkali-silica reaction (ASR), also known as concrete cancer, is one of the most prevalent causes of concrete degradation. In this chemical reaction, amorphous silica in the aggregates reacts with alkalis in the pore solution. By absorbing water, hydrop ...

We present a theory of deformation of ribbons made of nematic polymer networks (NPNs). These materials exhibit properties of rubber and nematic liquid crystals, and can be activated by external stimuli of heat and light. A two-dimensional energy for a shee ...

Weak solutions arise naturally in the study of the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations both from an abstract regularity/blow-up perspective and from physical theories of turbulence. This thesis studies the structure and size of singular set of such weak solu ...
