Mathematical and numerical modelling of the cardiovascular system is a research topic that has attracted remarkable interest from the mathematical community because of its intrinsic mathematical difficulty and the increasing impact of cardiovascular diseas ...

The prediction of pressure and output power fluctuations amplitudes on Francis turbine prototype is a challenge for hydro-equipment industry since it is subjected to guarantees to ensure smooth and reliable operation of the hydro units. The European FP7 re ...

A concise one dimensional thermal-hydraulic two-fluid model is presented for the numerical prediction of sulphur dioxide absorption from the flue gas onto drops of the water-limestone slurry in the vertical spray tower absorber. The model is based on mass, ...

Compressor impellers for mass-market turbochargers are die-casted and machined with an aim to achieve high dimensional accuracy and acquire specific performance. However, manufacturing uncertainties result in dimensional deviations causing incompatible ope ...

Dimensional metrology applications require performing measurements of profile and form/shape of parts at a nanometer-level of accuracy. Therefore, the metrological characteristics of a miniature optical micro-probe based on a Michelson interferometer are e ...

We introduce an upgraded version of a tomographical system which is built up from Absolute Extreme Ultraviolet-type (AXUV) detectors and has been installed on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV). The system is suitable for the investigation of fast ...

Background: In this paper, we present a framework for improving the accuracy of fixed-step methods for Monte Carlo simulation of discrete stochastic chemical kinetics. Stochasticity is ubiquitous in many areas of cell biology, for example in gene regulatio ...

This paper proposes to use Nesterov's fast gradient method for the solution of linear quadratic model predictive control (MPC) problems with input constraints. The main focus is on the method's a priori computational complexity certification which consists ...

River and open-channel flows present complex three-dimensional (3D) structures in the water column and on the surface as a result of the existence of secondary currents driven by either centrifugal force or turbulence. This paper experimentally investigate ...

The swirling flow developing in Francis turbine draft tube under part load operation leads to pressure fluctuations usually in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 times the runner rotational frequency resulting from the so-called vortex breakdown. For low cavitation n ...

The Uniformization Theorem due to Koebe and Poincaré implies that every compact Riemann surface of genus greater or equal to 2 can be endowed with a metric of constant curvature – 1. On the other hand, a compact Riemann surface is a complex algebraic curve ...

We have investigated the motion of a single optically trapped colloidal particle close to a limiting wall at time scales where the inertia of the surrounding fluid plays a significant role. The velocity autocorrelation function exhibits a complex interplay ...

Nowadays digital signal processing systems used for radar applications, communication systems or RF measurement equipments, require very high sample-rates. Sometimes these sample-rates are beyond the possibilities offered by conventional ADCs. To overcome ...

Placed in a fluid stream, solid bodies can exhibit a separated flow that extends to their wake. The detachment of the boundary layer on both upper and lower surfaces forms two shear layers which generate above a critical value of Reynolds number a periodic ...

In this thesis, we address different aspects of the airline scheduling problem. The main difficulty in this field lies in the combinatorial complexity of the problems. Furthermore, as airline schedules are often faced with perturbations called disruptions ...

Nowadays, the general trend towards to minimally invasive interventions is present in all the medical domains. For the surgical intervertebral spinal disc cutting or removal domain, it is particularly a necessity because the manual methods currently employ ...

The complexities of two-phase flow and evaporation on a tube bundle present important problems in the design of heat exchangers and the understanding of the physical phenomena taking place. The development of structured surfaces to enhance boiling heat tra ...

In multichannel sampling, several sets of sub-Nyquist sampled signal values are acquired. The offsets between the sets are unknown, and have to be resolved, just like the parameters of the signal itself. This problem is nonlinear in the offsets, but linear ...

The design of Pelton turbines has always been more difficult than that of reaction turbines, and their performances lower. Indeed, the Pelton turbines combine 4 types of flows: (i) confined, steady-state flow in the piping systems and injector, (ii) free w ...

Hydropower represented in 1999 19% of the world electricity production and the absolute production is expected to grow considerably during the next 30 years. Francis turbines play a major role in the hydroelectric production due to their extended range of ...
