This thesis addresses key challenges in developing adaptive lower-limb exoskeletons to enhance balance, mobility, and user autonomy during daily living activities. It presents a comprehensive exploration of three critical aspects: push recovery during stan ...

Using shape memory alloys (SMAs) as actuators offers several advantages, including high power density, large stroke capabilities, and friction elimination. These attributes make SMAs suitable for actuating flexure-based mechanisms in a wide array of extrem ...

The official Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production mission aims to demonstrate the ability to generate net electricity from fusion with the STEP Prototype Power plant. One of the key technological and engineering challenges in fusion power plants is mana ...

Because of established demolition routines and low construction-material production costs that neglect negative externalities, discarded concrete today is crushed and landfilled or downcycled as infill material or recycled aggregates, wasting its embodied ...

A novel approach for robust controller synthesis, which models uncertainty as an elliptical set, is proposed in the paper. Given a set of frequency response functions of linear time-invariant (LTI) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the approac ...

Shape-changing robots adapt their own morphology to address a wider range of functions or environments than is possible with a fixed or rigid structure. Akin to biological organisms, the ability to alter shape or configuration emerges from the underlying m ...

The main goal of my research is to establish guidelines for workplace design based on human biomechanics: specifically sitting workplaces and handling areas in 1/6G-1/3G (Moon, Mars) conditions. Such a workplace could be used in long-term space missions in ...

Observations from past earthquakes indicate that embedded column bases (ECBs) in steel moment resisting frames (MRFs) exhibited inelastic deformations while they were designed to be non-dissipative. Consequently, the amount of inelastic damage concentrated ...

The small Stokes shift and weak emission in the solid state are two main shortcomings associated with the boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) family of dyes. This study presents the design, synthesis and luminescent properties of boron difluoro complexes of 2-ar ...

This paper presents the results of an experimental campaign designed specifically to investigate unexpected and unwanted failures observed during the quasi-static and fatigue tensile loading of structural adhesives. Simple finite element models were also d ...

Adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron (AQFP) circuits are a family of superconducting electronic (SCE) circuits that have recently gained growing interest due to their low-energy consumption, and may serve as alternative technology to overcome the down-scaling ...

In this paper, the influence of tip clearance on the performance of small-scale turbopumps is studied numerically on extensive parameter ranges suitable for organic Rankine cycle applications. A novel and fully parameterized design model is developed and u ...

Technology scaling has progressed to enable integrated circuits with extremely high density enabling systems of tremendous complexity with manageable power consumption. With the continuation of Moore's law for many years, electronic chips have been able to ...

We introduce a construction of subspaces of the spaces of tangential vector, n-vector, and tensor fields on surfaces. The resulting subspaces can be used as the basis of fast approximation algorithms for design and processing problems that involve tangenti ...

Becoming a practical musician traditionally requires an extensive amount of preparatory work to master the technical and theoretical challenges of the particular instrument and musical style before being able to devote oneself to musical expression. In par ...

This thesis develops novel multi-degrees-of-freedom flexure-based force sensors by exploiting white light interferometry. Fabry-Pérot interferometry measurement has nanometric accuracy which yields sub milli-Newton force sensing accuracy. Such force sensin ...

Fundamental limits on radiation performance of implantable antennas serve as the design quality gauge, facilitate the choice of the antenna type, and provide simple design rules to maximize the radiation performance. This study obtains the limits using two ...

Peripheral neural interfaces have been successfully used in the recent past to restore sensory-motor functions in disabled subjects and for the neuromodulation of the autonomic nervous system. The optimization of these neural interfaces is crucial for ethi ...

In the inter-war period, progressive architects confronted the building of mass housing with an analogy with rational and functional workplaces. At the 2nd CIAM (Congres Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne), held in Frankfurt in 1929, this was tested aga ...

Laryngeal cancer treatments, while curative, often lead to voice impairment. Minimally invasive surgical methods that facilitate greater preservation of healthy tissue have recently emerged, but they are still limited in important ways. In this work, we de ...
