Closedness of the Tangent Spaces to the Orbits of Proper Actions

Résumé

In this note we show that, for any proper action of a Banach-Lie group G on a Banach manifold M, the corresponding tangent maps g -> T-x(M) have closed range for each x is an element of M, i.e., the tangent spaces of the orbits are closed. As a consequence, for each free proper action on a Hilbert manifold, the quotient M/G carries a natural manifold structure.

Banach manifold

In mathematics, a Banach manifold is a manifold modeled on Banach spaces. Thus it is a topological space in which each point has a neighbourhood homeomorphic to an open set in a Banach space (a more involved and formal definition is given below). Banach manifolds are one possibility of extending manifolds to infinite dimensions. A further generalisation is to Fréchet manifolds, replacing Banach spaces by Fréchet spaces. On the other hand, a Hilbert manifold is a special case of a Banach manifold in which the manifold is locally modeled on Hilbert spaces.

Variété (géométrie)

En mathématiques, et plus particulièrement en géométrie, la notion de variété peut être appréhendée intuitivement comme la généralisation de la classification qui établit qu'une courbe est une variété de dimension 1 et une surface est une variété de dimension 2. Une variété de dimension n, où n désigne un entier naturel, est un espace topologique localement euclidien, c'est-à-dire dans lequel tout point appartient à une région qui s'apparente à un tel espace.

Espace tangent

L'espace tangent en un point p d'une variété différentielle M est un espace vectoriel qui intuitivement est l'ensemble de tous les vecteurs-vitesse possibles d'un « mobile » se déplaçant (sans pouvoir la quitter) dans la variété M quand il est en p. Une façon commune en physique de décrire l'espace tangent est de dire que les vecteurs qu'il contient représentent les différences entre ce point et des points de la variété infiniment proches du premier.
