. We study very weak solutions to scalar Euler-Lagrange equations associated with quadratic convex functionals. We investigate whether W1,1 solutions are necessarily W 1,2 Nash and Schauder applicable. We answer this question positively for a suitable clas ...

We consider the problem of comparing several samples of stochastic processes with respect to their second-order structure, and describing the main modes of variation in this second order structure, if present. These tasks can be seen as an Analysis of Vari ...

Machine learning frameworks based on correlations of interatomic positions begin with a discretized description of the density of other atoms in the neighborhood of each atom in the system. Symmetry considerations support the use of spherical harmonics to ...

Since the birth of Information Theory, researchers have defined and exploited various information measures, as well as endowed them with operational meanings. Some were born as a "solution to a problem", like Shannon's Entropy and Mutual Information. Other ...

Theoretical and computational approaches to the study of materials and molecules have, over the last few decades, progressed at an exponential rate. Yet, the possibility of producing numerical predictions that are on par with experimental measurements is t ...

Many scientific inquiries in natural sciences involve approximating a spherical field –namely a scalar quantity defined over a continuum of directions– from generalised samples of the latter. Typically, a convex optimisation problem is formulated in terms ...

Covariance operators play a fundamental role in functional data analysis, providing the canonical means to analyse functional variation via the celebrated Karhunen-Loève expansion. These operators may themselves be subject to variation, for instance in con ...

Motivated by the presence of Ising transitions that take place entirely in the singlet sector of frustrated spin-1/2 ladders and spin-1 chains, we study two types of effective dimer models on ladders, a quantum dimer model and a quantum loop model. Buildin ...

Data-driven modeling and feedback control play a vital role in several application areas ranging from robotics, control theory, manufacturing to management of assets, financial portfolios and supply chains. Many such problems in one way or another are rela ...

The deterministic solution of the neutron transport problem entails the coupled solution of several partial differential equations, one for each energy group, direction and/or spherical harmonic. Several techniques have been devised for accelerating the so ...

A series of dicationic styrene-functionalized imidazolium-based salts, in which the two imidazolium rings are bridged by a functionalized spacer, are prepared. The salts are polymerized to afford cross-linked imidazolium-based ionic polystyrene materials, ...

PurposePatLoc (Parallel Imaging Technique using Localized Gradients) accelerates imaging and introduces a resolution variation across the field-of-view. Higher-dimensional encoding employs more spatial encoding magnetic fields (SEMs) than the corresponding ...

Orbital-density-dependent functionals, such as the Perdew-Zunger or the Koopmans-compliant functionals, are used to remove unphysical self-interaction energies and to restoremissing piece-wise linearity in approximate formulations of density-functional the ...

We propose a vector space approach for inverse rendering of a Lambertian convex object with distant light sources. In this problem, the texture of the object and arbitrary lightings are both to be recovered from multiple images of the object and its 3D mod ...

We recover jump-sparse and sparse signals from blurred incomplete data corrupted by (possibly non-Gaussian) noise using inverse Potts energy functionals. We obtain analytical results (existence of minimizers, complexity) on inverse Potts functionals and pr ...

This paper presents an analytical model for the force and torque developed by a reaction sphere actuator for satellite attitude control. The reaction sphere is an innovative momentum exchange device consisting of a magnetic bearings spherical rotor that ca ...

Context. High-precision cosmology requires the analysis of large-scale surveys in 3D spherical coordinates, i.e. spherical Fourier-Bessel decomposition. Current methods are insufficient for future data-sets from wide-field cosmology surveys. ...

In the last decade diffusion MRI has become a powerful tool to non-invasively study white-matter integrity in the brain. Recently many research groups have focused their attention on multi-shell spherical acquisitions with the aim of effectively mapping th ...

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a key modality to monitor brain activity with high temporal resolution. EEG makes use of an array of electrodes to measure the electrical potential on the scalp. While most traditional EEG analyses have looked at EEG rhythms ...

The anisotropy of the solid-liquid interfacial energy, gamma(sl), plays a key role in the accurate prediction of growth morphologies in metallic alloys. This interfacial energy anisotropy can vary duo to alloy composition, especially when that of the pure ...
