Visual data play a crucial role in modern society, and the rate at which images and videos are acquired, stored, and exchanged every day is rapidly increasing. Image compression is the key technology that enables storing and sharing of visual content in an ...

A crucial building block of responsible artificial intelligence is responsible data governance, including data collection. Its importance is also underlined in the latest EU regulations. The data should be of high quality, foremost correct and representati ...

The past decades have witnessed rapid growth in imaging as a major form of communication between individuals. Due to recent advances in capture, storage, delivery and display technologies, consumers demand improved perceptual quality while requiring reduce ...

Due to the increasing number of pictures captured and stored every day by and on digital devices, lossy image compression has become inevitable to limit the needed storage requirement. As a consequence, these compression methods might introduce some visual ...

Production quality and process efficiency are the two main drivers that lead any industrial strategy. To ensure product quality, a duality historically existed between two approaches, namely batch sampling and systematic sampling. In batch sampling, the ba ...

This paper proposes a studied case to assess the EMF (electromagnetic field) exposure distribution for a specific deployment scenario. This developed novel approach based on a Monte-Carlo (MC) approach took into account the non-uniform user distribution an ...

In this paper, we introduce a new solution and underlying architecture that allows remote participants to interact with hosts in a broadcast scenario. To achieve this, background extraction is first applied to video received from remote participants to ext ...

An attempt is made to translate five generic key performance indicators (KPIs) into a continuous real-time cost function in a batch order-based manufacturing environment. The challenge of controlling and optimizing resource utilization, production efficien ...

Refineries execute a series of interlinked processes, where the product of one unit serves as the input to another process. Potential failures within these processes affect the quality of the end products, operational efficiency, and revenue of the entire ...

Lossy image compression is a popular, simple and effective solution to reduce the amount of data representing digital pictures. In most lossy compression methods, the reduced volume of data in bits is achieved at the expense of introducing visual artifacts ...

In the digital era, users share their personal data with service providers to obtain some utility, e.g., access to high-quality services. Yet, the induced information flows raise privacy and integrity concerns. Consequently, cautious users may want to prot ...

Virtual metrology (VM) involves estimating a product's quality directly from production process data without physically measuring it. This enables the product quality of each unit of production to be monitored in real time, while preserving the process eff ...

Contemporary manufacturing companies pay a lot of attention to product quality as this aspect affects directly their competitiveness, productivity and the reputation of the company. Traditional quality improvement methods such as Six Sigma, Lean etc. seems ...

The rapid development of digital imaging and video has placed visual contents in the heart of our lives. Digital multimedia span a vast number of areas from business to leisure, including but not limited to education, medicine, accessibility, training, adv ...

In the competitive market of manufacturing, quality is a criterion of primary importance in order to win market share. Quality improvement must be coupled with performance point of view. Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Lean Six Sigma, Total Quality Manageme ...

Existing connectivity-oriented performance measures rank road delineation algorithms inconsistently, which makes it difficult to decide which one is best for a given application. We show that these inconsistencies stem from design flaws that make the metri ...

Despite extensive research efforts in the field of laser welding, the imperfect repeatability of the weld quality still represents an open topic. Indeed, the inherent complexity of the underlying physical phenomena prevents the implementation of an effecti ...

This paper presents a quality evaluation study of point cloud codecs that have been recently standardised by the MPEG committee. In particular, a subjective experiment to assess their performance in terms of bitrate against visual quality is designed and r ...

Point cloud is a 3D image representation that has recently emerged as a viable approach for advanced content modality in modern communication systems. In view of its wide adoption, quality evaluation metrics are essential. In this paper, we propose and ass ...

Immersive virtual reality (IVR) offers possibilities of creating a learner‐centric environment that can provide more presence and engagement for students leading to an enhanced learning experience compared to conventional classroom practices. However, the ...
