This study examines the impact of light absorption from biomass burning (BB) brown carbon (BrC) in the Mediterranean basin from local and distant fire incidents during a typical fire season in August 2019 and under severe fire activity in August 2021. The ...

Mixed-phase clouds (MPCs), composed of both liquid and ice, are prevalent in Southern Ocean cyclones. A characterization of these clouds on fine vertical scales is required in order to understand the microphysical processes within these clouds, and for mod ...

Meridional atmospheric transport is an important process in the climate system and has implications for the availability of heat and moisture at high latitudes. Near-surface cold and warm temperature advection over the ocean in the context of extratropical ...

To quantify the contribution of new particle formation (NPF) to ultrafine particle number and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) budgets, one has to understand the mechanisms that govern NPF in different environments and its temporal extent. Here, we study NP ...

Estuarine environments, as dynamic low-lying transition zones between rivers and the open sea, are vulnerable to sea level rise (SLR). To evaluate the potential impacts of SLR on estuarine responses, it is necessary to examine the altered tidal dynamics, i ...

The atmosphere is considered as an important external nutrient source for the marine environment, especially in remote ocean waters or the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea. Phosphorus (P) is a critical nutrient affecting primary productivity in large areas o ...

A four-month glider mission was analyzed to assess turbulent dissipation in an anticyclonic eddy at the western boundary of the subtropical North Atlantic. The eddy (radius ≈ 60 km) had a core of low potential vorticity between 100–450 m, with maximum radi ...

The major objective of this study was to develop further understanding of 3D nearshore hydrodynamics under a variety of wave and tidal forcing conditions. The main tool used was a comprehensive 3D numerical model – combining the flow module of Delft3D with ...

The effect of the local environment on the evolution of dwarf spheroidal galaxies is poorly understood. We have undertaken a suite of simulations to investigate the tidal impact of the Milky Way on the chemodynamical evolution of dwarf spheroidals that res ...

A numerical investigation is presented that demonstrates the influence of tides and waves on the transport and transformation of nutrients (NO3-; NH4+; PO43-) in a homogeneous unconfined nearshore aquifer and subsequent fluxes to the sea. Simulations of an ...

Over the last few decades, sessile benthic organisms from the Mediterranean Sea have suffered from the global warming of the world's oceans, and several mass mortality events were observed during warm summers. It has been hypothesized that mortality could ...

A comprehensive numerical study was undertaken to investigate transport of a variable-density, conservative solute plume in an unconfined coastal aquifer subject to high and low frequency oceanic forcing. The model combined variable-density saturated flow ...

To understand better how tides affect the soil conditions of salt marshes, pore-water flow in a modeled 3-D creek-marsh system was simulated under the influence of both monochromatic and spring-neap tides. In analyzing the simulation results, we examined s ...

Wind wave-induced erosional effects are among the chief landscape-forming processes in tidal biomorphodynamics. Wave-driven bottom erosion, in fact, controls the equilibrium elevation and dynamics of subtidal and tidal flat surfaces, and the impact of wave ...

Wave and tide are important forcing factors that typically co-exist in coastal environments. A numerical study was conducted to investigate individual and combined effects of these forces on flow and mixing processes in a near-shore subterranean estuary. A ...

The circum-Mediterranean region is characterized by a strongly seasonal climate with rainy winters and intense summertime drought, steep topography, and a multi-millennial history of intensive human land use, all of which make its soils vulnerable to erosi ...

A numerical study was conducted to investigate the influence of tides on the fate of terrestrially-derived BTEX discharging through an unconfined aquifer to coastal waters. Previous studies have revealed that tide-induced seawater circulations create an ac ...

Background: In this study we compare outlier loci detected using a FST based method with those identified by a recently described method based on spatial analysis (SAM). We tested a panel of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNSPs) previously genotyped in i ...

Transport of contaminants in coastal aquifers subject to tidal fluctuation is an important topic in hydrogeology as a consequence of the significant development of human activities near the shoreline. Despite this, relatively little work has been done to i ...

The tidal influence on groundwater hydrodynamics, salt- water intrusion and submarine groundwater discharge from coastal/estuarine aquifers is poorly quantified for systems with a mildly sloping beach, in contrast to the case where a vertical beach face is ...
