Proteins are fundamental components in biological systems and crucial for a variety of biological functions. Over the last decades, significant progress in structural biology has facilitated the study of proteins and their interactions with molecular partn ...

Huntington's disease (HD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder marked by the accumulation of Huntingtin protein (HTT) fragments in HD neuronal cells. These aggregates are predominantly composed of polyglutamine (polyQ)-containing HTT N-terminal frag ...

DNA-protein interactions lie at the crux of life's essential processes. As such, various technologies have been developed to characterize these interactions. The distinct advantages of these technologies can be leveraged to study different facets of these ...

The phenomenon of allostery, a general property in proteins that has been heralded as "the second secret of life" remains elusive to our understanding and even more challenging to incorporate into protein design. One example of allosteric proteins with gre ...

Background: Resistance to enteric pathogens is a complex trait at the crossroads of multiple biological processes. We have previously shown in the Drosophila Genetic Reference Panel (DGRP) that resistance to infection is highly heritable, but our understan ...

Recent progress in protein engineering, empowered by the rapidly evolving fields of synthetic biology and DNA synthesis, has enabled the generation of various custom-designed proteins. Their thorough analysis has led to applications in areas including medi ...

The implementation of multiplexed point-of-care biosensors is a top priority to address the current epidemic problems originated by widespread pathogenic infections, like those caused by viruses or bacteria. A rapid and accurate detection, identification, ...

Optogenetic switches are emerging molecular tools for studying cellular processes as they offer higher spatiotemporal and quantitative precision than classical, chemical-based switches. Light-controllable gene expression systems designed to upregulate prot ...

Source localization, the act of finding the originator of a disease or rumor in a network, has become an important problem in sociology and epidemiology. The localization is done using the infection state and time of infection of a few designated sensor no ...

Protein-based therapeutics, such as monoclonal antibodies and cytokines, are important therapies for various pathophysiological conditions such as oncology, autoimmune disorders, and viral infections. However, the wide application of such protein therapeut ...

Objectives: The management of bloodstream infection, a life-threatening disease, largely relies on early detection of infecting microorganisms and accurate determination of their antibiotic susceptibility to reduce both mortality and morbidity. Recently we ...

Background. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is associated with acute respiratory infection. We sought to identify RSV variants associated with prolonged infection. ...

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are an important health issue around the world. The consequences of HAIs incidence include prolonged hospital stays, increased resistance of microorganisms to antimicrobials, higher costs for health systems and for t ...

Phage display relies on a bacterial infection step in which the phage particles are replicated to perform multiple affinity selection rounds and to enable the identification of isolated clones by DNA sequencing. While this process is efficient for wild-typ ...

Only a small proportion of newborn infants exposed to a pathogenic microorganism develop overt infection. Susceptibility to infection in preterm infants and infants with known comorbidities has a likely multifactorial origin and can be often attributed to ...

One out of three pediatric sepsis deaths in high income countries occur in previously healthy children. Primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) have been postulated to underlie fulminant sepsis, but this concept remains to be confirmed in clinical practice. Pseu ...

This thesis addresses the preparation of antibacterial surfaces for hospital facilities taking biomedical thin polymer films, textiles and catheter as probes. Magnetron sputtering is used to apply the coatings leading to fast bacterial inactivation in the ...

Mammalian synthetic biology could be augmented through the development of high-throughput microfluidic systems that integrate cellular transfection, culturing, and imaging. We created a microfluidic chip that cultures cells and implements 280 independent t ...

Synucleinopathies such as Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies and multiple system atrophy (MSA) are detrimental neurodegenerative diseases. Alpha-synuclein (aSyn), the main aggregating protein found in the pathological inclusions of these ailmen ...

When an epidemic spreads in a network, a key question is where was its source, i.e., the node that started the epidemic. If we know the time at which various nodes were infected, we can attempt to use this information in order to identify the source. Howev ...
