Now is an exciting time for the domain of Earth observation (EO), with a multitude of diverse sensors looking at the planet from satellites, airplanes or drones. The volume of imagery acquired is massive, and hold great potential for a variety of applicati ...

Facial paralysis is a highly burdening condition, resulting in a patient's inability to move his musculature on one or both sides of the mouth. The restoration of facial movement is crucial for enhancing the overall patients' quality of life. The use of DE ...

As one of the major threats to women's health worldwide, breast cancer requires early diagnosis and accurate classification, since they are key to optimizing therapeutic interventions and ensuring precise prognosis. Recently, deep learning has demonstrated ...

Self-supervised learning (SSL) is a machine learning approach where the data itself provides supervision, eliminating the need for external labels. The model is forced to learn about the data's inherent structure or context by solving a pretext task. With ...

Deploying energy-efficient deep neural networks on energy-constrained edge devices is an important research topic in both machine learning and circuit design communities. Both artificial neural networks (ANNs) and spiking neural networks (SNNs) have been p ...

High-dimensional data must be highly structured to be learnable. Although the compositional and hierarchical nature of data is often put forward to explain learnability, quantitative measurements establishing these properties are scarce. Likewise, accessin ...

Many empirical studies have provided evidence for the emergence of algorithmic mechanisms (abilities) in the learning of language models, that lead to qualitative improvements in the model capabilities. Yet, a theoretical characterization of how such mecha ...

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are receiving increasing attention in wind power forecasting due to their ability to effectively capture complex patterns in wind data. However, their forecast errors are severely limited by the local optimal weight issue in opt ...

Real-time bioaerosol monitoring is improving the quality of life for people affected by allergies, but it often relies on deep learning models which pose challenges for widespread adoption. These models are typically trained in a supervised fashion and req ...

Neurons in the human amygdala and hippocampus are classically thought to encode a person’s identity invariant to visual features. However, it remains largely unknown how visual information from higher visual cortical areas is translated into such a semanti ...

Sign Language conveys information through multiple channels composed of manual (handshape, hand movement) and non-manual (facial expression, mouthing, body posture) components. Sign language assessment involves giving granular feedback to a learner, in ter ...

Deep neural networks form the backbone of artificial intelligence (AI) research, with potential to transform the human experience in areas ranging from autonomous driving to personal assistants, healthcare to education. However, their integration into the ...

Hand-Object Interaction (HOI) is gaining significant attention, particularly with the creation of numerous egocentric datasets driven by AR/VR applications. However, third-person view HOI has received less attention, especially in terms of datasets. Most t ...

Blindness remains one of the most impairing disabilities worldwide, profoundly affecting independence, social participation, and quality of life. While assistive technologies offer partial support, they do not restore visual function. Retinal prostheses re ...

From the nineteenth-century panorama to the emergence of the digital panoramic format in the 's, the visualization of large images frequently relies on panoramic viewing strategies. Originally rendered in the form of epic painted canvases, these strategies ...

With the emergence of ultra-portable ultrasound systems, the need to reduce cost and complexity of ultrasound systems has intensified. Sparse arrays, employing fewer transducer elements to acquire images, offer a viable solution by effectively minimizing d ...

Deploying compute-intensive deep neural networks (DNNs) on resource-constrained end devices has become a prominent trend, enabling localized intelligence. However, efficiently deploying these DNNs at scale poses challenges. To address this, extensive resea ...

The rapid progress of industrial development, urbanization, and traffic has caused air quality degradation that negatively affects human health and environmental sustainability, especially in developed countries. However, due to the limited number of senso ...

In this paper, we use synthetic data and propose a new method for template inversion attacks against face recognition systems. We use synthetic data to train a face reconstruction model to generate high-resolution (i.e., 1024 x 1024) face images from facia ...

The work presented in this thesis lies at the intersection of Machine Learning (ML) and control theory. The first part is dedicated to the design of Deep Neural Network (DNN) architectures with specific numerical properties, inspired by dynamical systems m ...
