The oxidation behavior of columnar and equiaxed Cr2AlC coatings in air at 990 °C is studied. During the transient heating-up period to 990 °C the two coating morphologies exhibit different oxidation behavior. In columnar coatings, faster Al diffusion along ...

Flow of lava, avalanches, mudslides, and many geophysical and planetary flow systems are examples of free-surface flows of Yield Stress Fluids (YSFs). This category of fluids is known for its dual behavior below- and above a yielding threshold for the appl ...

Wind turbine rotor blades are usually fabricated using composite materials and epoxy adhesive to bond the elements together. Due to their large size, the thickness of the adhesive layer varies from 1 to up to 30 mm depending on the position. The failure of ...

Two different heat-transport mechanisms are discussed in solids. In crystals, heat carriers propagate and scatter particlelike as described by Peierls's formulation of the Boltzmann transport equation for phonon wave packets. In glasses, instead, carriers ...

Hypothesis: The dynamics of colloidal suspension confined within porous materials strongly differs from that in the bulk. In particular, within porous materials, the presence of boundaries with complex shapes entangles the longitudinal and transverse degre ...

This research presents a mathematical formulation for optimizing integration of complex industrial systems from the level of unit operations to processes, entire plants, and finally to considering industrial symbiosis opportunities between plants. The fram ...

We consider the Langevin dynamics of a many-body system of interacting particles in d dimensions, in a very general setting suitable to model several out-of-equilibrium situations, such as liquid and glass rheology, active self-propelled particles, and gla ...

Using the kinetic approach, we study the impact of the charged particle dynamics due to the Schwinger effect on the electric field evolution during inflation. As a simple model of the electric field generation, we consider the kinetic coupling of the elect ...

In this work, we study the constitutive behavior of interacting colloidal suspensions for moderate and high concentrations. Specifically, using a lattice Boltzmann solver, we numerically examine suspensions flowing through narrow channels, and explore the ...

The plastic flow of amorphous materials displays non-local effects, characterized by a cooperativity length scale xi. We argue that these effects enter in the more general description of surface phenomena near critical points. Using this approach, we obtai ...

Waiting time in any network is often a costly and hence a bad experience. Therefore, to avoid jamming regions becomes essential in the optimization of traffic flows. In this regard, the conception and the control of complex networks supporting flows of uni ...

In situ forming implants are attractive for minimally invasive localized therapies such as aneurysm embolization. As for the superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), their deposition/injection in a target tissue area allows magnetically induced ...

The influence of the constant life diagram (CLD) formulation on the fatigue life prediction of composite materials was examined. Most commonly used and recently proposed CLDs applied on composite materials fatigue data are presented and their applicability ...

The application of hydrogels as load-bearing biomedical components is often limited by their mechanical properties. Often an attempt to improve a hydrogel's stiffness is accompanied by a loss of toughness and swelling properties. In this work, we show that ...

Integral Equation (IE) formulation solved by Method of Moments may be used efficiently to address the problem of quasi-waveguide structures, i.e. structures consisting of a main waveguide with a constant cross section that may bear an arbitrary number of p ...

In this paper, a new formulation in the time domain of the Cooray-Rubinstein expression is presented. This new formulation overcomes the problems related to the previous formulation: The Dirac pulse contained in the kernel of the previous formulation is ex ...

Besides 'bulk' structural and functional ceramic, a third interesting group of inorganic or ceramic materials exists: particles used for medical applications like contrast agent as building blocks for photonic crystals, as thin or thick layers with control ...

Luminescent markers play a key role in imaging techniques for life science since they provide a contrast mechanism between signal and background. We describe a new type of marker using second harmonic generation (SHG) from noncentrosymmetric BaTiO3 nanocry ...

The intrinsic lattice resistance to dislocation motion, or Peierls stress, depends on the core structure of the dislocation and is one essential feature controlling plastic anisotropy in materials such as HCP Zn, Mg, and Ti. Here, we implement an anisotrop ...

The present invention is related to new molecules capable of interacting with target of rapamycin (TOR) transcriptional complex. In particular, the present invention provides novel nucleic acid molecules, processes for production thereof, kits containing t ...
