The White Rabbit Time Synchronization Protocol for Synchrophasor Networks

Résumé

Within the context of time dissemination techniques for power systems applications, the paper discusses the use of the White Rabbit (WR) protocol for synchrophasor networks. Specifically, the paper presents a Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) integrating the WR technology and its experimental validation with a focus on the synchrophasor phase estimation in steady state conditions, by using a PMU calibrator generating the reference signals. We further compare the accuracy of the developed PMU with other state-of-the-art time synchronization technologies for PMUs. i.e., Global Positioning System (GPS) and Precision Time Protocol (PTP), demonstrating applicability of WR for PMU sensing networks.

Phasor measurement unit

A phasor measurement unit (PMU) is a device used to estimate the magnitude and phase angle of an electrical phasor quantity (such as voltage or current) in the electricity grid using a common time source for synchronization. Time synchronization is usually provided by GPS or IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol, which allows synchronized real-time measurements of multiple remote points on the grid. PMUs are capable of capturing samples from a waveform in quick succession and reconstructing the phasor quantity, made up of an angle measurement and a magnitude measurement.

Time and frequency transfer

Time and frequency transfer is a scheme where multiple sites share a precise reference time or frequency. The technique is commonly used for creating and distributing standard time scales such as International Atomic Time (TAI). Time transfer solves problems such as astronomical observatories correlating observed flashes or other phenomena with each other, as well as cell phone towers coordinating handoffs as a phone moves from one cell to another.

Precision Time Protocol

Le Precision Time Protocol (PTP) est un protocole utilisé pour synchroniser les signaux d'horloge des différents éléments d'un réseau, par exemple un réseau Ethernet. Il a été normalisé par l'Internet Engineering Task Force sous le nom d'IEEE-1588 en 2002 et a été modifié en (version 2) et en novembre 2019 (version 3). La Commission électrotechnique internationale lui donne le nom d'IEC 61588. Le PTP n'a pas vocation à déterminer un horodatage, mais à le transmettre.
