The evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties of AISI 904L stainless steel subjected to high-pressure torsion (HPT) and post-deformation annealing was investigated. A nanocrystalline microstructure with an average grain size of 48 nm was obtain ...

Multi-material structures have gained significant attention for their ability to combine properties of different alloys, making them promising for technical applications and potential replacements for conventional single-alloy components. The advancement o ...

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) and melt electrowriting (MEW) are techniques that use polymer fibers as building blocks for printing complex 3D structures, with fibers at the macroscopic and micrometer scale. Here, FDM and MEW are used to produce fibers of ...

Additive manufacturing in construction typically consists of ground-based platforms. Introducing aerial capabilities offers scope to create or repair structures in dangerous or elevated locations. The Aerial Additive Manufacturing (AAM) project has develop ...

Nature produces soft materials with fascinating combinations of mechanical properties. For example, the mussel byssus embodies a combination of stiffness and toughness, a feature that is unmatched by synthetic hydrogels. Key to enabling these excellent mec ...

Titanium-based Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) manufactured by additive manufacturing offer tremendous lightweighting opportunities. However, processing the high reinforcement contents needed to substantially improve elastic modulus while conserving signifi ...

Melt electrowriting is a microscale manufacturing technique that uses polymer-based melts to create fibrous structures. An electric field is used to stabilize a continuous molten jet, which is then written onto a substrate as a microscale fiber. Herein, it ...

The synthesis of high-performance gas-sieving zeolitic film is challenging because it involves seeded secondary growth which is complex and difficult to reproduce. Additionally, expensive asymmetric inorganic porous supports are often needed for calcinatio ...

Experimental data is imperative to characterize the behavior of materials used in structural analysis models. The aim of this data paper is to establish a database of material-scale uniaxial experiments, primarily conducted at EPFL, to assist with simulati ...

This paper presents the development and industrial manufacturing of a pultruded high-performance carbon fibre (CF) reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite strip using a bio-based unsaturated polyester (UP) resin containing more than 50% of its weight derived f ...

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based soft polymer optical fibers (POFs) have recently demonstrated their intriguing potential for different sensing applications like strain or temperature sensing. Recent studies have elaborated on the sensing capability of PD ...

Synthetic messenger RNA (mRNA)-based therapeutics have emerged as promising candidates for the prevention and treatment of a wide range of diseases and disorders. mRNA possesses notable advantages, including exceptional safety, the capacity to replace vari ...

The aggregation-induced emission properties of tetraarylethenes (TAEs) have led to numerous applications in chemistry, biology, and materials science. Herein, we describe two fluorinated tetraarylethenes, which can be employed as universal tags for the syn ...

In this paper, the charged polymer escapement phenomenon, via a little hole of nano-metric dimensions arranged in a constitutive biological membrane, is studied. We will present the case of the transport process of an ideal polymer in a 3-dimensional exten ...

This paper presents the results of an experimental campaign designed specifically to investigate unexpected and unwanted failures observed during the quasi-static and fatigue tensile loading of structural adhesives. Simple finite element models were also d ...

This paper presents the manufacturing and the mechanical and thermomechanical properties of a bio-based glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite, produced by vacuum infusion, using an in-house high-performance bio-based unsaturated polyester resin ( ...

Many natural materials are structured on different length scales. This structuring often leads to an intricate interplay between soft and stiff components, which significantly improves the fracture toughness of these materials. A class of soft material tha ...

Polymer brushes are a specific class of polymer thin films in which each chain is tethered to the underlying substrate via one chain end. In sufficiently densely grafted assemblies, the individual polymer chains are forced into an extended chain conformati ...
