Powder bed fusion with laser beam (PBF-LB) is a promising additive manufacturing technique that enables the production of complex geometries with fine resolution and material efficiency, offering significant design freedom and material versatility. However ...

The impressive capabilities of humans to robustly perform manipulation stems from compliant interactions, enabled by the structure and materials distributed in the hands. We propose that mimicking this spatially distributed compliance in an anthropomorphic ...

We study a model for the initial state of the universe based on a gravitational path integral that includes connected geometries which simultaneously produce bra and ket of the wave function. We argue that a natural object to describe this state is the Wig ...

Morton's knots are a family of space curves to which there is no plane simultaneously tangent in three distinct points. This property enables a physical instance to roll on a plane while having at most two contact points with it. These knots are not smooth ...

Glacial moulins (cylindrical meltwater drainage shafts) provide valuable insights into glacier dynamics, but are inaccessible and hazardous environments for humans to study. Exploring them using passive sensor probes has revealed their complex geometry, wh ...

The integration of the new plasma position reflectometer in the RFX-mod2 experiment (the upgraded version of the previous RFX-mod that operated until 2015) is presented in this contribution. Particular attention has been devoted to the high field side subs ...

This paper presents the new 2D electrostatic particle -in -cell code FENNECS developed to study the formation of magnetized non -neutral plasmas in geometries with azimuthal symmetry. This code has been developed in the domain of gyrotron electron gun desi ...

Silicate glasses have played a major role as structural and functional materials in human civilization since ancient Egypt. Despite their widespread use and importance in modern society, silica glasses with complex geometries are only fabricated in automat ...

Solar dishes concentrate the quasi-collimated sun light towards a focal point. Typically, the optical characterization consists of experimental flux map measurements and Monte-Carlo ray-tracing (MCRT) simulations, which are fitted based on experimental dat ...

The ITER Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating and Current Drive (ECRH&CD) system relies on 1 MW 170 GHz Gyrotrons to provide the mm-wave power needed for plasma heating, current drive, and magneto-hydrodynamic control. The design and modeling of the contro ...

In this thesis, we concentrate on advancing high-level behavioral control policies for robotic systems within the framework of Dynamical Systems (DS). Throughout the course of this research, a unifying thread weaving through diverse fields emerges, and tha ...

In this paper, we present a new method for upcycling concrete rubble waste into slender walls through the lightweight digital augmentation of mainstream construction machines. By using such method, the environmental impact of concrete construction and demo ...

A method for optimizing at least one of a geometry, an implantation procedure, and/or stimulation protocol of one or more electrodes for an electrical stimulation of a target structure in a nervous system of a living being by a computer device, the method ...

We propose a framework for the construction of 4D scientific models for cities of the past. It leverages both the use of computational methods for bootstrapping, and a collaborative interface for visualisation and edition. This permits to continuously enri ...

Side-by-side hybrid textiles are an intermediate step for the production of fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites. Press moulding these materials combining reinforcing fibre textiles and thermoplastic matrix textiles or flexible layers is a promising m ...

Local modifications of a computational domain are often performed in order to simplify the meshing process and to reduce computational costs and memory requirements. However, removing geometrical features of a domain often introduces a non-negligible error ...

This thesis is a study of the global well-posedness of the Cauchy problems for half-wave maps from the Minkowski space of dimension n+1 to the 2-dimensional sphere and the hyperbolic plane. The work is mainly based on the results from Krieger-Sire 17' in ...

Collapsing cell complexes was first introduced in the 1930's as a way to deform a space into a topological-equivalent subspace with a sequence of elementary moves. Recently, discrete Morse theory techniques provided an efficient way to construct deformatio ...

This paper summarizes a methodology developed at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne for the neutronic modeling of the CROCUS experimental reactor and proposes solutions to the challenges one may face while modeling a research reactor with a complex g ...

Let h be a connective homology theory. We construct a functorial relative plus construction as a Bousfield localization functor in the category of maps of spaces. It allows us to associate to a pair (X,H), consisting of a connected space X and an hperfect ...
