The infiltration of a non-wetting liquid, such as molten metal, into a porous solid, such as a ceramic preform, is influenced by the wetting angle of the liquid on the solid. The link between local wetting and the minimum pressure required for initiation o ...

This thesis consists of three chapters on informational frictions in financial markets. The chapters analyze problems related to markets' ability to guide real investment, and what drives liquidity. Both problems are important to ensure efficient resource ...

In nanocrystalline diamond thin films, the high grain boundary density and the associated grain boundary properties may dominate the overall material behavior. In the present work, we systematically investigate (111) twist grain boundaries in diamond carbo ...

Modern datacenters need to tackle efficiently the increasing demand for computing resources while minimizing energy usage and monetary costs. Power market operators have recently introduced emerging demand-response programs, in which electricity consumers ...

In the chapter ``When to Introduce Electronic Trading Platforms in Over-the-Counter Markets?'' An equilibrium in a market is determined in which traders have the choice between using an electronic platform with a request-for-quote protocol or calling a dea ...

The difficulty of obtaining annotations to build training databases still slows down the adoption of recent deep learning approaches for biomedical image analysis. In this paper, we show that we can train a Deep Net to perform 3D volumetric delineation giv ...

Global energy systems are changing rapidly. This energy transition complicates the use of traditional policy analysis methods. However, proper policy analysis and design is essential in managing the transition. This thesis takes an interdisciplinary approa ...

We extend Duffie et al.'s (2005) search-theoretic model of over-the-counter (OTC) asset markets, allowing for a decentralized inter-dealer market with arbitrary heterogeneity in dealers' valuations (or, equivalently, inventory costs). We develop a solution ...

The failure of frictional interfaces - the process of frictional rupture - is widely assumed to feature crack-like properties, with far-reaching implications for various disciplines, ranging from engineering tribology to earthquake physics. An important co ...

This paper is a contribution to assessing the Swiss energy transition, with an emphasis on the consequences of decommissioning the nuclear power plants for the electricity market and the whole economy. We expect that increased renewable generation and dema ...

Predictive gait simulations currently do not account for environmental or internal noise. We describe a method to solve predictive simulations of human movements in a stochastic environment using a collocation method. The optimization is performed over mul ...

Based on a dynamic model of the stochastic repayment behavior exhibited by delinquent credit-card accounts as a self-exciting point process, a bank can control the arrival intensity of repayments using costly account-treatment actions. A semi-analytic solu ...

We use the database leak of Mt. Gox exchange to analyze the dynamics of the price of bitcoin from June 2011 to November 2013. This gives us a rare opportunity to study an emerging retail-focused, highly speculative and unregulated market with trader identi ...

This introductory, along with the eight articles contained within this Special Issue, highlights and brings greater clarity to entrant-incumbent interactions and to firm movement - when entrants traverse market territories for the creation and/or delivery ...

In our modern society, the average citizen has turned into a daily cloud user. Despite being virtually transparent for the user, internet services require data centers behind the scenes. Data centers burn several megawatts of power and their electricity bi ...

In this work, the environmental impacts caused by an innovative upcycling process of printed plastic scrap have been assessed through Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology for the first time. The process consists of removing the inks from the plastic surfa ...
