The thesis is dedicated to the study of two main partial differential equations (PDEs) in fluid dynamics: the Navier-Stokes equations, which describe the motion of incompressible fluids, and the transport equation with divergence-free velocity fields, whic ...

We seek to address how air entrapment mechanisms during infiltration are influenced by the wetting characteristics of the fluid and the pore network formed by the reinforcement. To this end, we evaluated the behavior of two model fluids with different surf ...

Multiscale phenomena are involved in countless problems in fluid mechanics. Coating flows are known to exhibit a broad variety of patterns, such as wine tears in a glass and dripping of fresh paint applied on a wall. Coating flows are typically modeled und ...

Vortex rings are very efficient at transporting fluid on long distances and can generate large forces, either thrust or drag. These abilities are influenced by the vorticity distribution within the vortex. Previous work on vortices produced by piston-cylin ...

We present a numerical model for the simulation of 3D mono-dispersed sediment dynamics in a Newtonian flow with free surfaces. The physical model is a macroscopic model for the transport of sediment based on a sediment concentration with a single momentum ...

This paper is associated with a video winner of a 2019 American Physical Society's Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD) Gallery of Fluid Motion Award for work presented at the DFD Gallery of Fluid Motion. The original video is available online at the Gallery o ...

Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) allow for worldwide geothermal electricity production. They target deep (3-5 km), fractured rock reservoirs whose permeability is artificially increased through hydraulic stimulations (fluid injections). The injections mod ...

Injection of fluids in geo-reservoirs can reduce the effective stresses at depth, lubricating the nearby faults, promoting slip and, potentially, earthquakes. High-viscous fluids are often used during hydraulic fracturing and production phases in geo-reser ...

This paper is associated with a video winner of a 2018 American Physical Society's Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD) Milton van Dyke Award for work presented at the DFD Gallery of Fluid Motion. ...

The present paper focuses on the simulation of the high-velocity impact of a projectile impacting on a water-jet, causing the onset, development and collapse of cavitation. The simulation of the fluid motion is carried out using an explicit, compressible, ...

We investigate the growth of an axisymmetric hydraulic fracture in an impermeable quasi-brittle material accounting for the presence of a fluid lag. The process zone is simulated using a linear softening cohesive zone model and is characterized by an incre ...

Orbitally shaken bioreactors (OSRs) are commonly used for the cultivation of mammalian cells in suspension. Here we conducted a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to characterize the fluid field in the disposable 600-mL orbital ...

Capsules are often employed to prolong the shelf-life of active ingredients such as many drugs, food additives, or cosmetic substances because they delay their oxidation or prevent interactions with molecules contained in the surrounding. If designed prope ...

We study a nonlinear fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problem between an incompressible, viscous fluid and a composite elastic structure consisting of two layers: a thin layer (membrane) in direct contact with the fluid, and a thick layer (3D linearly ela ...

Liquid films flowing down the underside of inclined plates are subject to the interaction between the hydrodynamic and the Rayleigh-Taylor (R-T) instabilities causing a patterned and wavy topology at the free surface. The R-T instability results from the d ...

This paper presents a detailed study of the pressure waves and effective mechanical properties of a closed-cell cellular solid with entrained fluid. Plane-harmonic-waves are analyzed in a periodic square with a finite-element model of a representative-volu ...

We compare dynamical nonequilibrium molecular dynamics and continuum simulations of the dynamics of relaxation of a fluid system characterized by a non-uniform density profile. Results match quite well as long as the lengthscale of density nonuniformities ...

We reconsider the radial Saffman-Taylor instability when a fluid injected from a point source displaces another fluid of higher viscosity in a Hele-Shaw cell where the fluids are confined between two neighboring flat plates. The advancing fluid front is un ...

This chapter reviews techniques of model reduction of fluid dynamics systems. Fluid systems are known to be difficult to reduce efficiently due to several reasons. First of all, they exhibit strong nonlinearities – which are mainly related either to nonlin ...

We present flume experiments showing plastic behavior for perfectly density-matched suspensions of non-Brownian particles within a Newtonian fluid. In contrast with most earlier experimental investigations (carried out using coaxial cylinder rheometers), w ...
