In this account, we discuss the use of genetic algorithms in the inverse design process of homogeneous catalysts for chemical transformations. We describe the main components of evolutionary experiments, specifically the nature of the fitness function to o ...

This paper presents a new power-efficient and high-speed voltage level shifter. In the proposed structure, the existing contentions at the internal nodes are reduced using auxiliary transistors and feedback networks, leading to a significant reduction in t ...

The medium-voltage grid emulator is gaining popularity for testing grid-code compliance of large-capacity converters for renewable energy resources. The cascaded H-bridge converter based on active-front-ends is a promising candidate for high-power grid emu ...

The shift towards DC power distribution networks, enabled by power electronics technologies, is changing the nature of electrical power systems. Nowadays, DC power distribution networks can effectively support the high penetration of distributed energy res ...

As the share of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs) in power distribution systems increases, hybrid AC/DC distribution systems are drawing more interest. Indeed, CIDERs usually rely on DC power and hybrid AC/DC grids with few Network ...

We formulate computed-tomography reconstruction as a continuous-domain optimization problem with Hessian total variation (HTV) as the regularizer. HTV is a sparsity-promoting regularizer that favors continuous and piecewise-linear functions with few affine ...

This work studies the power density (PD) optimization in wind farms, and its sensitivity to the available area size. A novel genetic algorithm (PDGA) is introduced, which optimizes PD and the turbine layout, by self-adapting to the PD and to the solutions ...

Typical legged locomotion controllers are designed or trained offline. This is in contrast to many animals, which are able to locomote at birth, and rapidly improve their locomotion skills with few real-world interactions. Such motor control is possible th ...

The present invention relates to a method for operating a resonant power converter (1) having a primary stage (2) and a secondary stage (3) at least one of which is actively operated and includes a half-bridge or full-bridge inverter (21) having a pull-up ...

We consider a network of agents that must solve an online optimization problem from continual observation of streaming data. To this end, the agents implement a distributed cooperative strategy where each agent is allowed to perform local exchange of infor ...

With the increase in penetration of power electronic converters in the power systems, a demand for overcurrent/ overloading capability has risen for the fault clearance duration. This article gives an overview of the limiting factors and the recent technol ...

Solid-State Transformers with Input-Series/Output-Parallel configuration offer a convenient solution for AC/DC conversion due to their scalability and modularity. In this configuration, each module experiences a second-order harmonic ripple caused by local ...

We introduce a reconfigurable medium for the manipulation of elastic propagation properties of Lamb waves. It is based on a shape memory polymer (SMP) with temperature-dependent Young's modulus. Waves are excited by a laser pulse and detected by a laser vi ...

In two-stage solid-state transformers with input-series output-parallel structure, the LLC converter operating at a fixed switching frequency is a common choice for the isolated DC/DC conversion stage because it can provide a high efficiency and a fixed vo ...

Solid-State Transformers with Input-Series/Output- Parallel configuration offer a convenient solution for AC/DC power conversion, thanks to their modularity, scalability and flexibility. However, as known, they are affected by a second-order harmonic rippl ...

There are various possibilities to realize coil winding designs for an inductive power transfer system. In order to achieve high power transfer efficiency and power density and explore trade-offs between the two, design optimization around the coil link is ...

In this paper, we present an exact (i. e. non-approximated) and linear measurement model for hybrid AC/DC microgrids for recursive state estimation (SE). More specifically, an exact linear model of a voltage source converter (VSC) is proposed. It relies on ...

The auxiliary power supply for medium voltage converters requires high insulation capability between the source and the load. Inductive power transfer technology, with an air gap between the primary and secondary coil, offers such high insulation capabilit ...

This paper focuses on the operational characteristics of a medium voltage resonant DC transformer based on a split capacitor IGCT 3L-NPC leg. The study delves into both the dynamic and static balancing aspects of the 3L-NPC when operating in a two-level, 5 ...

Inductive magnetic sensors are needed for tokamak operation to provide the low-frequency (LF) measurements leading to the equilibrium reconstruction and to monitor the higher frequency (HF) instabilities; the HF magnetic sensors are often also used as a ba ...
