While momentum-based accelerated variants of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) are widely used when training machine learning models, there is little theoretical understanding on the generalization error of such methods. In this work, we first show that th ...

In this thesis, we study two closely related directions: robustness and generalization in modern deep learning. Deep learning models based on empirical risk minimization are known to be often non-robust to small, worst-case perturbations known as adversari ...

In this article, we study the problem of Byzantine fault-tolerance in a federated optimization setting, where there is a group of agents communicating with a centralized coordinator. We allow up to

Deep neural networks have become ubiquitous in today's technological landscape, finding their way in a vast array of applications. Deep supervised learning, which relies on large labeled datasets, has been particularly successful in areas such as image cla ...

The current advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) and the solutions being offered by this technology have accounted IoT among the top ten technologies that will transform the global economy by 2030. IoT is a state-of-the-art paradigm that has developed ...

In confidential computing, the view of the system software is Manichean: the host operating system is untrusted and the TEE runtime system is fully trusted. However, the runtime system is often as complex as a full operating system, and thus is not free fr ...

This paper considers the problem of resilient distributed optimization and stochastic learning in a server-based architecture. The system comprises a server and multiple agents, where each agent has its own local cost function. The agents collaborate with ...

The variational approach is a cornerstone of computational physics, considering both conventional and quantum computing computational platforms. The variational quantum eigensolver algorithm aims to prepare the ground state of a Hamiltonian exploiting para ...

Collaborative learning algorithms, such as distributed SGD (or D-SGD), are prone to faulty machines that may deviate from their prescribed algorithm because of software or hardware bugs, poisoned data or malicious behaviors. While many solutions have been ...

We propose a stochastic conditional gradient method (CGM) for minimizing convex finitesum objectives formed as a sum of smooth and non-smooth terms. Existing CGM variants for this template either suffer from slow convergence rates, or require carefully inc ...

We study generalization properties of random features (RF) regression in high dimensions optimized by stochastic gradient descent (SGD) in under-/overparameterized regime. In this work, we derive precise non-asymptotic error bounds of RF regression under b ...

Sharpness-Aware Minimization (SAM) is a recent training method that relies on worst-case weight perturbations which significantly improves generalization in various settings. We argue that the existing justifications for the success of SAM which are based ...

We study the problem of learning unknown parameters of stochastic dynamical models from data. Often, these models are high dimensional and contain several scales and complex structures. One is then interested in obtaining a reduced, coarse-grained descript ...

State-of-the-art training algorithms for deep learning models are based on stochastic gradient descent (SGD). Recently, many variations have been explored: perturbing parameters for better accuracy (such as in Extra-gradient), limiting SGD updates to a sub ...

Despite the non-convex optimization landscape, over-parametrized shallow networks are able to achieve global convergence under gradient descent. The picture can be radically different for narrow net-works, which tend to get stuck in badly-generalizing loca ...

Neural-network quantum states (NQS) have been shown to be a suitable variational ansatz to simulate out-of-equilibrium dynamics in two-dimensional systems using timedependent variational Monte Carlo (t-VMC). In particular, stable and accurate time propagat ...

Variance-reduced gradient estimators for policy gradient methods have been one of the main focus of research in the reinforcement learning in recent years as they allow acceleration of the estimation process. We propose a variance-reduced policy-gradient m ...

This paper considers the Byzantine fault-tolerance problem in distributed stochastic gradient descent (D-SGD) method - a popular algorithm for distributed multi-agent machine learning. In this problem, each agent samples data points independently from a ce ...
