In the past decades, a significant increase of the transistor density on a chip has led to exponential growth in computational power driven by Moore's law. To overcome the bottleneck of traditional von-Neumann architecture in computational efficiency, effo ...

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been the most significant driver in the field of nucleic acid testing (NAT) since its invention. Popularized as an abbreviation by the Covid-19 pandemic, PCR-based methods are the gold standard in the field of diagnostic ...

The objective of this PhD thesis is the development of a microfluidic platform for the real-time measurements of the mechanical properties of biological analytes at the single entity level. The systems developed for these purposes consist of piezoelectrica ...

Microfluidic is an ensemble of technologies and methods that permits the handling and analysis of minute volumes of samples in short timescales. Since its introduction it revealed a remarkable potential to unveil novel biological mechanisms. The small volu ...

Matching the scale of microfluidic flow systems with that of microelectronic chips for realizing monolithically integrated systems still needs to be accomplished. However, this is appealing only if such re-scaling does not compromise the fluidic throughput ...

Pressure lies at the basis of operation of most microfluidic systems, and is a determinant factor in the extent of miniaturization and in limiting the throughput and time constant of the microfluidic assays. Despite the apparent importance given to fluidic ...

A micro-power energy harvesting system based on core(crystalline Si)-shell(amorphous Si) nanowire solar cells together with a nanowire-modified CMOS sensing platform have been developed to be used in a dust-sized autonomous chemical sensor node. The mote ( ...

A multimaterial inkjet printing method for integrated soft multifunctional machines is reported, combining dense arrays of electrostatic actuators, multilayer electrical routing, and complex networks of microfluidic channels in one printing process. Most a ...

This study adds a new dimension to lab-on-a-chip systems by employing three-dimensional (3D) integration technology for improved performance, higher functionality, and on-chip computational power. Despite the extensive amount of current research on 3D memo ...

Here we present an electrical lysis throughput of 600 microliters per minute at high cell density (108 yeast cells per ml) with 90% efficiency, thus improving the current common throughput of one microliter per minute. We also demonstrate the extraction of ...

In this work, we demonstrate a new thermal management approach for direct cooling of GaN-on-Si power integrated circuits (ICs), in which the Si substrate functions as a microfluidic heat sink, turning Si into a cost-effective, high thermal performance subs ...

In the past decades, two recording tools have established themselves as the working horses in the field of electrophysiological cell research: the microelectrode array (MEA) and the optical fluorescence imaging. The former is a grid of miniature electrodes ...

Caenorhabditis elegans is one of the most attractive model organisms in biomedical research for understanding human diseases and for drug testing at a whole-organism level, since many biological pathways and genes have been conserved between itself and hum ...

Resistive Random Access Memories (ReRAMs) have been researched intensively in the last past decades as a promising alternatives technology for the next-generation non-volatile memory (NVM) devices. ReRAMâ s excellent performance properties such as high sw ...

The term of optofluidics defines an emergent research field that combines microfluidics and optics. In many lab-on-a-chip applications, these two technologies are used in combining the microfluidics for sample delivery and optics for sensing and controllin ...

High pressure-rated channels allow microfluidic assays to be performed on a smaller footprint while keeping the throughput, thanks to the higher enabled flow rates, opening perspectives for cost-effective integration of CMOS chips to microfluidics circuits ...

Numerous analytical techniques for life sciences have been at the basis of the improvement of medical diagnostics and treatments. Current challenges in bioanalytics are related to the conception of methods enabling large amount of information to be extract ...

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is an attractive model organism, owing notably to its short life cycle, genetic tractability, and optical transparency facilitating microscopic observation. This thesis deals with the realization of technological tools f ...

Minimally invasive monitoring of the electrical activity of specific cortical areas using implantable microsystems offers the promise of diagnosing neurological diseases, as well as detecting and identifying neural activity patterns which are specific to a ...

This paper presents the theoretical and experimental development of an integrated position sensor for lab-on-a-chip devices. The interest for single cell analysis is growing. However, this requires monitoring and controlling cell displacements in real time ...
