Many eukaryotes form multinucleated cells during their devel-opment. Some cells persist as such during their lifetime, others choose to cleave each nucleus individually using a specialized cytokinetic process known as cellularization. What is cellula-rizat ...

Many human cancers manifest the capability to circumvent attack by the adaptive immune system. In this work, we identified a component of immune evasion that involves frequent up-regulation of fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) in solid tumors. FM ...

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) is used to characterize brain tissue microstructure employing tissue-specific biophysical models. A current limitation, however, is that most of the proposed models are based on the assumption of negli ...

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNET) comprise two molecular subtypes, relatively benign islet tumors (IT) and invasive, metastasis-like primary (MLP) tumors. Until now, the origin of aggressive MLP tumors has been obscure. Herein, using multi-omics ap ...

ER-phagy, literally endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-eating, defines the constitutive or regulated clearance of ER portions within metazoan endolysosomes or yeast and plant vacuoles. The advent of electron microscopy led to the first observations of ER-phagy ove ...

The invasive behavior of glioblastoma, the most aggressive primary brain tumor, is considered highly relevant for tumor recurrence. However, the invasion zone is difficult to visualize by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and is protected by the blood brain ...

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is the only technique that allows label-free imaging of nanoscale biomolecular dynamics, playing a crucial role in solving biological questions that cannot be addressed by other major bioimaging tools (fluorescence or electron ...

Excessive levels of saturated fatty acids are toxic to cells, although the basis for this lipotoxicity remains incompletely understood. Here, we analyzed the transcriptome, lipidome, and genetic interactions of human leukemia cells exposed to palmitate. Pa ...

Bone marrow was recently proposed as an alternative and potentially immune-privileged site for pancreatic islet transplantation. The aim of the present study was to assess the survival and rejection mechanisms of free and encapsulated xenogeneic islets tra ...

Anionic, monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been shown to nondisruptively penetrate cellular membranes. Here, we show that a critical first step in the penetration process is potentially the fusion of such AuNPs with lipid bilayers. Free e ...

Background: The control of the functional pancreatic beta-cell mass serves the key homeostatic function of releasing the right amount of insulin to keep blood sugar in the normal range. It is not fully understood though how beta-cell mass is determined. ...

Single particle tracking can reveal dynamic information at the scale of single molecules in living cells but thus far has been limited either in the range of potential protein targets or in the quality and number of tracks attainable. We demonstrate a new ...

Microdevices dedicated to monitor metabolite levels have recently enabled many applications in the field of cell analysis, to monitor cell growth and development of numerous cell lines. By combining the traditional technology used for electrochemical biose ...

We have developed a digital holographic microscope (DHM), in a transmission mode, adapted to the quantitative study of cellular dynamics. Living cells in culture are optically probed by measuring the phase shift they produce on the transmitted wave front. ...
