Iron-based shape memory alloys (Fe-SMAs) can be used for strengthening of existing concrete structures in civil and architectural engineering. This study investigates the recovery behavior of Fe-SMAs under varying pre-strain levels, activation temperatures ...

The seismic assessment of existing steel structures necessitates the development of practice- oriented engineering models for use in nonlinear static and dynamic analysis procedures. These models should encompass the full range of the anticipated nonlinear ...

This study investigated the origin of the enhanced pseudo-elasticity of additively manufactured vanadium carbide-containing Fe-based shape memory alloys. The aged samples with two different starting microstructures, as-built and solution-treated, showed co ...

Martensitic crystallography plays a vital role in the texture evolution and mechanical properties in Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloys when subjected to deformation. However, their microstructural changes during deformation are not well known and ...

The hydromechanical response of a Wyoming-type bentonite (MX-80) and its interface with steel was studied in terms of shear resistance under different hydration levels. A series of shear tests under constant normal stress were performed in total suction co ...

Multi-material laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) is a promising approach to meet industrial demands for multifunctional components, due to its enhanced freedom of design. Copper and stainless steel are interesting materials to be combined due to the hi ...

Text Reuse reveals meaningful reiterations of text in large corpora. Humanities researchers use text reuse to study, e.g., the posterior reception of influential texts or to reveal evolving publication practices of historical media. This research is often ...

This article reports on the current state of the OBI DICT project, a bilingual e-dictionary of oracle-bone inscriptions (OBI), incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) image recognition technology. It first provides a brief overview of the development of ...

Carefully extracting reinforced concrete (RC) elements from soon-to-be demolished structures and reusing them as load-bearing components is an emerging circular low-carbon alternative to building new structures. As floor construction typically accounts for ...

Technology supporting meditation is a multimillion-dollar market that continues to grow. There is also strong academic interest to understand and improve the impact technology can have for the user experience of practitioners. However, little work investig ...

Titanium has become in recent years an interesting material in many applications that require a combination of high mechanical properties and low density. It has the peculiarity of undergoing an allotropic transformation at 882°C. Below this temperature, ...

This study investigates the microstructure and properties of functionally graded NiTi alloy bilayers. The NiTi layer is printed by laser powder bed fusion on a NiTiX (where X is Hf or Cu) substrate prepared by vacuum arc remelting. Specimens produced with ...

Prequalified beam-to-column connections in steel moment resisting frames usually concentrate inelastic deformations in the steel beam ends. As such, nonlinear geo-metric instabilities (i.e., local buckling) may occur in these regions at modest lateral drif ...

Computer systems rely heavily on abstraction to manage the exponential growth of complexity across hardware and software. Due to practical considerations of compatibility between components of these complex systems across generations, developers have favou ...

Interface stress is a fundamental descriptor for interphase boundaries and is defined in strict relation to the interface energy. In nanomultilayers with their intrinsically high interface density, the functional properties are dictated by the interface st ...

In this work, we reviewed the available phase selection rules comprising atomic size and topological aspects, entropies, enthalpies, melting points, valence and itinerant electron concentrations, as well as electronegativity, and validated them using a car ...

Steel frame structures are essential components of modern infrastructure. Understanding their behavior under seismic loading is critical for ensuring public safety and minimizing damage that occurs during earthquakes. To accurately predict the response of ...

We document that in unstressed, undeformed, samples of pure iron containing silica inclusions precipitated by melt deoxidation, the iron matrix and a small fraction of the silica inclusions are locally separated at room temperature by a void. Thermal cycli ...

Why are materials with specific characteristics more abundant than others? This is a fundamental question in materials science and one that is traditionally difficult to tackle, given the vastness of compositional and configurational space. We highlight he ...

Nonlinear continuum finite element (CFE) analyses rely on accurate multiaxial constitutive law formulations along with reliable imperfection patterns for simulating nonlinear geometric instabilities in steel members under mechanical loading. Validations of ...
