The global energy system transforming from fossil fuels to renewable green energy through the adaption of innovative and dynamic green technologies. Energy-saving buildings (ESBs) are attracting extensive attention as intelligent architectures capable of s ...

Global climate warming is leading to more frequent and severe extreme weather events, with alpine regions like the European Alps being particularly vulnerable. This thesis explores future changes in extreme weather dynamics in the southeastern Swiss Alps a ...

Aluminium is one of the most widely used metals in the world, but its production is highly energy intensive and largely dependent on the use of fossil fuels. A typical secondary aluminium production facility consumes 700-1,000 kWh of natural gas and 200-40 ...

The thesis explores the issue of fairness in the real-time (RT) control of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) hosted in active distribution networks (ADNs) in the presence of uncertainties by proposing and experimentally validating appropriate control ...

The transition towards renewable energy is leading to an important strain on the energy grids. The question of designing and deploying renewable energy technologies in symbiosis with existing grids and infrastructure is arising. While current energy system ...

The thesis presents methods for controlling and planning distributed energy resources (DERs) in active distribution networks (ADNs). It deals with three main challenges: (i) developing and experimentally validating grid-aware real-time control frameworks, ...

Liquid composite moulding methods are widely applied for manufacturing of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites and consist of two main stages: impregnation of fibrous reinforcements by a liquid monomer resin and curing of this resin. This thesis work ...

Environmental concerns are leading to a fast transition in electric power systems towards replacing fossil fuel and nuclear generation with renewable generation. This transition has two significant implications for electric power systems: 1-The capacity o ...

The energy transition towards a carbon-neutral and sustainable economy is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century to combat global warming and pollution. The decarbonization process is affecting every sector of the economy (electricity, transpor ...

In the context of the need to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from personal transportation, a new process for the production of e-methanol is presented. It is a CO2 hydrogenation process, powered mainly by renewable energy sources such as pho ...

The global demand for fossil fuels in the transportation sector is increasing rapidly due to the continuous growth of internal combustion engine vehicles. This leads to severe environmental problems, including greenhouse gas emissions and air-quality deter ...

In the past few years, the importance of electric mobility has increased in response to growing concerns about climate change. However, limited cruising range and sparse charging infrastructure could restrain a massive deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) ...

In the context of increasing concern for anthropogenic CO2 emissions, the residential building sector still represents a major contributor to energy demand. The integration of renewable energy sources, and particularly of photovoltaic (PV) panels, is becom ...

The integration of renewable energy sources within the built environment is a compelling challenge to tackle. With the recent climate targets aiming at a carbon neutral energy supply by the mid-century, a modern building energy system (BES) should maximize ...

There is a need by distribution system operators and power suppliers to propose ancillary services to enhanced grid operation allowing the optimal deployment of photovoltaic panels, cogeneration technologies and distributed storage. This deliverable theref ...

The cross-flow turbine is an attractive technology for small-scale hydropower generation thanks to its low capital cost and relatively high efficiency even under partial discharge operating conditions. It has been proposed that this kind of turbine can be ...

The large-scale deployment of photovoltaics (PV) on building rooftops can play a significant role in the transition to a low-carbon energy system. To date, the lack of high-resolution building and environmental data and the large uncertainties related to e ...
