We show that constant-Fermi-level ab initio molecular dynamics can be used as a computer-based tool to reveal and control relevant defects in semiconductor materials. In this scheme, the Fermi level can be set at any position within the band gap during the ...

We fabricated amorphous silicon n-i-p solar cells with two types of nanopatterned back reflectors using stencil lithography. One reflector type has a plasmonic grating that is embedded in the ZnO layer; the other one has a metallic grating patterned on top ...

We report a study of the quantum dot (QD) emission in short photonic crystal waveguides. We observe that the quantum dot photoluminescence intensity and decay rate are strongly enhanced when the emission energy is in resonance with Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity ...

Ultraviolet (UV) studies in astronomy, cosmology, planetary studies, biological and medical applications often require precision detection of faint objects and in many cases require photon-counting detection. We present an overview of two approaches for ac ...

The vast majority of disruptive innovations in science and technology has been originated from the discovery of a new material or the way its properties have been exploited to create novel devices and systems. New advanced nanomaterials will have a lasting ...

This thesis is devoted to theoretically study the systems of single quantum dots (QDs) embedded in various photonic nanostructures, in close relation with experimental data. The word single is essential: due to their nanometer size, QDs have mainly been st ...

In this article we compare the two-photon photoluminescence and second harmonic generation from single connected gold nanodimers. Analyzing the particle size-dependent nonlinear optical spectra and performing excitation polarization resolved measurements u ...

A detailed investigation and characterization of the local properties of individual nanoscopic structures is of great importance for the understanding of novel physical phenomena at the nanoscale as well as for the assessment of their possible use in futur ...

For many scientific applications, electron multiplying charge coupled devices (EMCCDs) have been the sensor of choice because of their high quantum efficiency and built-in electron amplification. Lately, many researchers introduced scientific complementary ...

Given the urgent need to develop a sustainable, carbon neutral energy storage system on a global scale, intense efforts are currently underway to advance the field of artificial photosynthesis: i.e. solar fuel engineering. In this review we give an overvie ...

In recent years, the fabrication of novel ultrathin film systems featuring multi-functionalities has been extensively studied due to their potential applications in photonics, sensors and solar cells. In a general sense, the primary goal of the present the ...

Low-temperature solution-processed organic-inorganic halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 has demonstrated great potential for photovoltaics and light-emitting devices. Recent discoveries of long ambipolar carrier diffusion lengths and the prediction of the Rashba ...

Coupling the emitted light from single quantum dots into an optic fiber has been demonstrated as a. plug and play' single-photon Source. In this work, lifetime dynamics measurements were performed with two time-delayed femtosecond optical pulses at differe ...

The exceptional performance of self-assembled Quantum Dot (QD) materials renders them extremely appealing for their use as optical communications devices. As lasers, they feature reduced and temperature independent threshold current and proper emission wav ...

Picosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is used to investigate the electronic and structural dynamics initiated by plasmon excitation of 1.8 nm diameter Au nanoparticles (NPs) functionalised with 1-hexanethiol. We show that 100 ps after photoexcitat ...
