Objective. A key challenge of virtual reality (VR) applications is to maintain a reliable human-avatar mapping. Users may lose the sense of controlling (sense of agency), owning (sense of body ownership), or being located (sense of self-location) inside th ...

Saliency models are image-based prediction models that estimate human visual attention. Such models, when applied to architectural spaces, could pave the way for design decisions where visual attention is taken into account. In this study, we tested the pe ...

BackgroundUnilateral spatial neglect (USN) is a debilitating neuropsychological syndrome that often follows brain injury, in particular a stroke affecting the right hemisphere. In current clinical practice, the assessment of neglect is based on old-fashion ...

Head tracking combined with head movements have been shown to improve auditory externalization of a virtual sound source and contribute to the performance in localization. With certain technically constrained head-tracking algorithms, as can be found in we ...

IntroductionOne-third of mothers rate their childbirth as traumatic. The prevalence of childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) is 4.7%. Skin-to-skin contact is a protective factor against CB-PTSD. However, during a caesarean section (CS ...

VR (Virtual Reality) is a real-time simulation that creates the subjective illusion of being in a virtual world. This thesis explores how integrating the user's body and fingers can be achieved and beneficial for the user to experience VR. At the advent of ...

Cybersickness still poses a significant challenge to the widespread usage of virtual reality (VR), leading to different levels of discomfort and potentially breaking the immersive experience. Researchers have attempted to discover the possible fundamental ...

Computers have long been augmenting human capabilities and communication, and with emerging technologies, physical immersion in virtual worlds is now attainable. These advancements push the boundaries of human potential, allowing designers, architects, eng ...

The convergence of human and artificial intelligence is currently receiving considerable scholarly attention. Much debate about the resulting Hybrid Minds focuses on the integration of artificial intelligence into the human brain through intelligent brain- ...

Providing Virtual Reality(VR) users with a 3D representation of their body complements the experience of immersion and presence in the virtual world with the experience of being physically located and more personally involved. A full-body avatar representa ...

As an emerging technology in the era of Industry 4.0, digital twin is gaining unprecedented attention because of its promise to further optimize process design, quality control, health monitoring, decision and policy making, and more, by comprehensively mo ...

Schizophrenia is a chronic and disabling mental illness characterized by a disordered sense of self. Current theories suggest that deficiencies in the sense of control over one’s actions (Sense of Agency, SoA) may underlie some of the symptoms of schizophr ...

Interpersonal skills require mastering a wide range of competencies such as communication and adaptation to different situations. Effective training includes the use of videos in which role models perform the desired behaviours such that trainees can learn ...

Professionals involved in building construction and monitoring increasingly implement new practices made available by Building Information Modelling (BIM), Virtual Reality (VR) and the Internet of Things (IoT). In spite of numerous efforts, most methods in ...

The current approach to train Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is to employ a mannequin device replicating the physical properties of a real human head and torso. This aims to ensure a correct transfer of the cardiac massage location, amplitude and freq ...

Cybersickness induced through Virtual Reality (VR) applications is still one of its main barriers as it can induce unwanted side-effects in players, significantly hindering the overall experience. Despite the wealth of research available on this topic, it ...

In this study, we explore the use of virtual reality to subjectively evaluate the visual quality of point cloud contents. To this aim, we develop the PointXR toolbox, a set of Unity applications that can host experiments under variants of interactive and p ...

Cybersickness continues to be one of the main barriers for mainstream adoption of Virtual Reality (VR). Despite the wealth of research available on this topic, it is still an unsolved problem. This paper explores the potential influence of cybersickness ov ...

This paper presents the results of a study performed in order to evaluate whether a navigation technique, based on scaling the user’s avatar, impacts the user’s ability to correctly assess the size of virtual objects in a virtual environment. This study wa ...

Introduction: Personally meaningful past episodes, defined as episodic memories (EM), are subjectively re-experienced from the natural perspective and location of one's own body, as described by bodily self-consciousness (BSC). Neurobiological mechanisms o ...
