Atomic force microscopy (AFM), a member of the scanning probe microscopy (SPM) family, holds a unique position as a nano-characterization instrument in the fields of physics, chemistry, and biology. Its ability to provide atomic resolution and operate in v ...

Training science and engineering students to become responsible citizens and professionals requires novel and creative pedagogical approaches, such as design thinking. This concept relies on processes and tools to develop creativity and problem-solving ski ...

Population equations for infinitely large networks of spiking neurons have a long tradition in theoret-ical neuroscience. In this work, we analyze a recent generalization of these equations to populations of finite size, which takes the form of a nonlinear ...

Studies of cybersickness (CS) often require a significant invest- ment in creating the primary VR environment and other experiment- related features. In addition, minor differences in VR content in independent studies may lead to opposite results. This mot ...

Ternary-based titanium nitride (TiN) thin films have drawn attention toward rational applications due to their wear resistance, high hardness, and corrosion resistance. The influence of Mo content on the structural, tribo-logical, and mechanical properties ...

Augmented reality in additive fabrication is predominantly applied to the manufacturing of structures from regularly shaped materials. Our work however embraces natural heterogeneity, by focusing on the assembly of irregularly shaped elements such as miner ...

Teachers’ self-efficacy in managing classrooms is an important consideration when it comes to bringing educational robots to classrooms. Orchestration tools support teachers by providing awareness indicators of students’ progress as well as levers to contr ...

External kink modes, believed to be the drive of the 0-limiting resistive wall mode, are strongly stabilized by the presence of a separatrix. We thus propose a novel mechanism explaining the appearance of long-wavelength global instabilities in free bounda ...

As more educational activities are conducted online, the need for interactive applications (apps) that can effectively support educators in their practice is increasing. These apps are often created by web developers or by researchers, educators, and even ...

Koopmans spectral functionals are a class of orbital-density-dependent functionals designed to accurately predict spectroscopic properties. They do so markedly better than their Kohn-Sham density-functional theory counterparts, as demonstrated in earlier w ...

Over the past decade, the use of chatbots for educational purposes has gained considerable traction. A similar trend has been observed in social coding platforms, where automated agents support software developers with tasks such as performing code reviews ...

Identification of the most stable structure(s) of a system is a prerequisite for the calculation of any of its properties from first-principles. However, even for relatively small molecules, exhaustive explorations of the potential energy surface (PES) are ...

Solid-state qubits can be implemented with electrostatically confined quantum dots in semiconductors, allowing gate voltages to independently control the electrochemical potentials of each quantum dot. Quantum dots offer high levels of reliability and scal ...

In the Large Hadron Collider, the beam losses are continuously measured for machine protection. By design, most of the particle losses occur in the collimation system, where the particles with high oscilla-tion amplitudes or large momentum error are scrape ...

Over the past few years, there has been an increase in the use of chatbots for educational purposes. Nevertheless, the chatbot technologies and architectures that are often applied to educational contexts are not necessarily designed for such contexts. Whi ...

Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) in horizontal configuration could provide a path for scalable NW-based devices. Bottom-up large-scale manufacturing of these nanostructures by selective area epitaxy (SAE) relies on precise nanopatterning of various shapes on ...

We recently put forward an argument, the Unfolding Argument (UA), that integrated information theory (IIT) and other causal structure theories are either already falsified or unfalsifiable, which provoked significant criticism. It seems that we and the cri ...

Numerical multiscale methods usually rely on some coupling between a macroscopic and a microscopic model. The macroscopic model is incomplete as effective quantities, such as the homogenized material coefficients or fluxes, are missing in the model. These ...

The learning process depends on the nature of the learning environment, particularly in the case of open-ended learning environments, where the learning process is considered to be non-linear. In this paper, we report on the findings of employing a multimo ...

Traditional contact tracing is one of the most powerful weapons people have in the battle against a pandemic, especially when vaccines do not yet exist or do not afford complete protection from infection. But the effectiveness of contact tracing hinges on ...
