The archive of science is a place where scientific practices are sedimented in the form of drafts, protocols of rejected hypotheses and failed experiments, obsolete instruments, outdated visualizations and other residues. Today, just as science goes more a ...

Informed by longstanding artistic practice, this doctoral thesis approaches entanglements of Swiss coloniality in Brazil and Switzerland under the lens of land, archive, and visuality. The enduring legacies of imperial capitalism in the former Colonia Leop ...

Traditional martial arts are treasures of humanity's knowledge and critical carriers of sociocultural memories throughout history. However, such treasured practices have encountered various challenges in knowledge transmission and now feature many entries ...

Investigating the intangible nature of a cultural domain can take multiple forms, addressing for example the aesthetic, epistemic and social dimensions of its phenomenology. The context of Southern Chinese martial arts is of particular significance as it c ...

This contribution argues for the potential of Barr, Khaled and Lessard’s Method for Design Materialization (MDM) as a research through design tool that is specifically suited for new media preservation. Building moreover from the ISEA first and second Summ ...

This dissertation interrogates postcolonial cities’ syncretic territories, using Huế’s mnemonic sites – historically and culturally significant locales that aid in remembrance – to explore displaced communities’ cohabitation tactics and decolonization effo ...

Nowadays, the energy efficiency of the existing building stock is internationally accepted as a topical issue. Energy retrofitting is encouraged, improving the thermal performances of buildings, but often altering the historical image of our cities. Attent ...

During the conceptual design phase of an aircraft manufacturing system, different industrial scenarios need to be evaluated against performance indicators in a collaborative engineering process. Domain experts' knowledge and the motivations for decision-ma ...

Model-free Reinforcement Learning (RL) generally suffers from poor sample complexity, mostly due to the need to exhaustively explore the state-action space to find well-performing policies. On the other hand, we postulate that expert knowledge of the syste ...

The progress towards intelligent systems and digitalization relies heavily on the use of automation technology. However, the growing diversity of control objects presents significant challenges for traditional control approaches, as they are highly depende ...

Intelligence involves processing sensory experiences into representations useful for prediction. Understanding sensory experiences and building these contextual representations without prior knowledge of sensor models and environment is a challenging unsup ...

Large training datasets have played a vital role in the success of modern deep learning methods in computer vision. But, obtaining sufficient amount of training data is challenging, specially when annotating volumetric images. This is because fully annotat ...

Audiovisual archives are the mnemonic archives of the 21st century, with important cultural institutions increasingly digitizing their video collections. However, these remain mostly inaccessible, due to the sheer amount of content combined with the lack o ...

Computational thinking (CT) skills are becoming increasingly relevant for future professionals across all domains, beyond computer science (CS). As such, an increasing number of bachelor and masters programs outside of the computer science discipline integ ...

In this article, I focus on digital scientific archives which are made up of the leftovers of science, such as drafts, obsolete instruments, photographs, documentation, etc. The artifacts exhibited in such collections were neither meant to be representatio ...

Digitization has been recognized as effective means to safeguard cultural heritage, simultaneously producing a significant body of data resources within the GLAM sector. Digital curatorial innovations in the museums have created tools to enhance accessibili ...

The Centre Beaubourg of Paris, now known as the Centre National d'Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou, conceived by Piano+Rogers Architects and Ove Arup & Partners, between 1971 and 1977, represents one of the rare synthesis of the architectural, constructi ...

Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is a noval approach to support complex system development by formalizing system artifacts and development using models. Though MBSE models provide a completely structural formalisms about system development for system ...

Formalised knowledge systems, including universities and research institutes, are important for contemporary societies. They are, however, also arguably failing humanity when their impact is measured against the level of progress being made in stimulating ...

Materials Cloud is a platform designed to enable open and seamless sharing of resources for computational science, driven by applications in materials modelling. It hosts (1) archival and dissemination services for raw and curated data, together with their ...
