Stochastic self-assembly provides promising means for building micro-/nano-structures with a variety of properties and functionalities. Numerous studies have been conducted on the control and modeling of the process in engineered self-assembling systems co ...

Background: A wide class of human diseases and neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, is due to the failure of a specific peptide or protein to keep its native functional conformational state and to undergo a conformational change into a ...

In the course of this thesis, two chemically very different topics are going to be discussed. The first part will cover the chemistry of borophosphonate and borophosphate cages, with regard to their application as building blocks for network structures or ...

Carbon-rich organic compounds containing a series of conjugated triple bonds (oligoynes) are relevant synthetic targets, but an improved access to oligoynes bearing functional groups would be desirable. Here, we report the straightforward synthesis of two ...

Understanding how nanomaterials interact with interfaces is essential to control their self-assembly as well as their optical, electronic, and catalytic properties. We present here an experimental approach based on neutron reflectivity (NR) that allows the ...

Organic photovoltaics will be one of the corner stones in solving the increasing world's energy demand issue. For this reason, a better understanding of the detailed mechanisms involved in energy conversion in the employed nanostructured materials is still ...

The use of solvent-free microfluidics to fine-tune the physical and chemical properties of chitosan nanoparticles for drug delivery is demonstrated. Nanoparticle self-assembly is driven by pH changes in a water environment, which increases biocompatibility ...

Metal organic supramolecular chemistry on surfaces has matured to a point where its underlying growth mechanisms are well understood and structures of defined coordination environments of metal atoms can be synthesized in a controlled and reproducible proc ...

Enzymes are biocatalysts widely used in a large number of industrial biotech processes as they offer clear advantages over their chemical counterparts. Indeed, enzymes often show high substrate selectivity along with elevated turnover rates. Enzymatic cata ...

In the past decades, polymeric nanoparticles have emerged as a most promising and viable technology platform for targeted and controlled drug delivery. As vehicles, ideal nanoparticles are obliged to possess high drug loading levels, deliver drug to the sp ...

Organic nanowires are important building blocks for nanoscopic organic electronic devices. In order to ensure efficient charge transport through such nanowires, it is important to understand in detail the molecular parameters that guide self-assembly of pi ...

In order to produce materials with tailored structures and functions via supramolecular self-assembly of molecular precursors in a predictable fashion, it is necessary to develop 'supramolecular methods' based on structurally simple 'supramolecular synthon ...
