Database workloads have significantly evolved in the past twenty years. Traditional database systems that are mainly used to serve Online Transactional Processing (OLTP) workloads evolved into specialized database systems that are optimized for particular ...

The isolation level Multiversion Read Committed (RC), offered by many database systems, is known to trade consistency for increased transaction throughput. Sometimes, transaction workloads can be safely executed under RC obtaining the perfect isolation of ...

Independent modeling of various modules of an information system (IS), and consequently database subschemas, may result in formal or semantic conflicts between the modules being modeled. Such conflicts may cause collisions between the integrated database s ...

Modern applications accumulate data at an exponentially increasing rate and traditional database systems struggle to keep up. Decision support systems used in industry, rely heavily on data analysis, and require real-time responses irrespective of data siz ...

While phi-divergences have been extensively studied in convex analysis, their use in optimization problems often remains challenging. In this regard, one of the main shortcomings of existing methods is that the minimization of phi-divergences is usually pe ...

We are currently witnessing a shift towards the use of high-level programming languages for systems development. These approaches collide with the traditional wisdom which calls for using low-level languages for building efficient software systems. This sh ...

In the second part of this study a sensitivity analysis on the prediction methods is performed to consider the effect of plate geometry on thermal hydraulic performance and an extensive comparison of all the two-phase pressure drop and flow boiling heat tr ...

Modern industrial, government, and academic organizations are collecting massive amounts of data at an unprecedented scale and pace. The ability to perform timely, predictable and cost-effective analytical processing of such large data sets in order to ext ...

Modern hardware is abundantly parallel and increasingly heterogeneous. The numerous processing cores have non-uniform access latencies to the main memory and processor caches, which causes variability in the communication costs. Unfortunately, database sys ...

Query plans offer diverse tradeoffs between conflicting cost metrics such as execution time, energy consumption, or execution fees in a multi-objective scenario. It is convenient for users to choose the desired cost tradeoff in an interactive process, dyna ...

Nowadays, business and scientific applications accumulate data at an increasing pace. This growth of information has already started to outgrow the capabilities of database management systems (DBMS). In a typical DBMS usage scenario, the user should define ...

The common "one size does not fit all" paradigm isolates transactional and analytical workloads into separate, specialized database systems. Operational data is periodically replicated to a data warehouse for analytics. Competitiveness of enterprises today ...

Database systems deliver impressive performance for large classes of workloads as the result of decades of research into optimizing database engines. High performance, however, is achieved at the cost of versatility. In particular, database systems only op ...

Recent studies highlight that traditional transaction processing systems utilize the micro-architectural features of modern processors very poorly. L1 instruction cache and long-latency data misses dominate execution time. As a result, more than half of th ...

Scaling the performance of shared-everything transaction processing systems to highly-parallel multicore hardware remains a challenge for database system designers. Recent proposals alleviate locking and logging bottlenecks in the system, leaving page latc ...

The shift to multi-core and multi-socket hardware brings new challenges to database systems, as the software parallelism determines performance. Even though database systems traditionally accommodate simultaneous requests, a multitude of synchronization ba ...

The shift to multi-core hardware brings new challenges to database systems, as the software parallelism determines performance. Even though database systems traditionally accommodate simultaneous requests, a multitude of synchronization barriers serialize ...

Over the past decade, new solid state storage technologies, with flash being the most mature one, have become increasingly popular. Such technologies store data durably, and can alleviate many handicaps of hard disk drives (HDDs). Nonetheless, they have ve ...

Classifying materials from their appearance is challenging. Impressive results have been obtained under varying illumination and pose conditions. Still, the effect of scale variations and the possibility to generalise across different material samples are ...

This thesis demonstrates that, despite earlier projections to the contrary, database replication on a cluster of low-cost commodity servers can transparently scale database performance. In a replicated system providing the standard transactional properties ...
