The performance of three-dimensional (3D) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is predominantly limited by interfacial non-radiative recombination and instability. Although low-dimensional (LD) interlayers, particularly two-dimensional (2D) perovskites, are widely adopted for surface passivation, their heterogeneous n-values and quantum-well confinement often impede charge transport. One-dimensional (1D) perovskites offer a promising alternative due to their structural flexibility and superior passivation capabili

Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into chemicals and fuels offers a promising route towards a circular carbon economy. High-temperature CO2 electroreduction in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) delivers high selectivity and energy efficiency, but suffers from a tradeoff between mechanical robustness and electrochemical activity. Here we resolve this constraint using a hybrid ionic-conductor architecture that decouples electrocatalysis, ionic transport and mechanical support into function-specific layer

Perovskites solar cells (PSCs) have emerged, since 2009, as the most promising technology to replace/complement crystalline silicon PV.[1] Outstanding results of PCE up to 26.7 % have been obtained using perovskites (eg. MAPbI3) in just a few years of research. The continuous improvement of the efficiency in PSCs has been achieved using commercially available spiro-OMeTAD as hole-transporting material (HTM). However, spiro-OMeTAD is an expensive material due to its difficult purification and multi-step synt

We demonstrate high-efficiency perovskite–silicon tandem solar cells using double-sided tunnel oxide passivated contacts (TOPCon2) bottom cells, achieving 30.2% efficiency on both-sides flat and 31.3% on front-textured devices. The former is enabled by high passivation quality on flat surfaces and the latter by enhanced optical performance. These results highlight that TOPCon2 is a promising platform for scalable tandem integration beyond silicon heterojunction-based bottom cells.

Spacecraft electrostatic discharge is a type of surface discharge in vacuum which is commonly known as vacuum surface flashover, posing a significant threat to the safe operation of spacecraft solar cells. This numerical study investigates vacuum surface flashover on spacecraft solar cells triggered by an inverted potential gradient (IPG), using particle-in-cell simulations. Incorporating the realistic solar cell structure [room temperature vulcanized (RTV) adhesive, cover glass, and metal interconnector] a

Carrier-selective, passivating contacts have allowed silicon heterojunction (SHJ) cells to reach recordbreaking efficiencies particularly in all-back-contacted designs. However, two-side-contacted SHJ cell efficiency has been limited due in part to parasit ...

The hydrothermal synthesis of SrTiO3 in a Sr(OH)(2)/NaOH solution by reaction of four different single crystalline titanium precursors (anatase, rutile, sodium titanate, and hydrogen titanate) having the same nanowire morphology was investigated under stag ...

We evaluate the performance of thin-film silicon micromorph tandem solar cells deposited on transparent superstrates with embossed micrometer-scale 2-D gratings. Once coated with a thin conductive layer of hydrogenated indium oxide, the textured superstrates can be used as 2-D periodic single-texture front electrodes. Combining these almost loss-free front electrodes with a highly transparent, random self-textured zinc oxide layer (with a thickness 1 um) deposited by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) materials are increasingly used in building construction for the design of multifunctional structures. These composite materials allow the integration of structural functions, building physics functions (mainly thermal insulation) and architectural functions (complex forms and color) in single large-scale building components. GFRP materials also allow the fabrication of translucent structural components with high degree of transparency when optically aligned resins and

We present a proof of principle demonstration of a reversible in-plane actuator activated by focused sunlight, and describe a concept for its use as a self-tracking mechanism in a planar solar concentrator. By actuating at the location of focused sunlight ...

Over the past fifteen years dye-sensitised nanocrystalline solar cells have been the subject of intense research and development efforts. These systems provide a technically and economically credible alternative to classical p-n junction solar cells, reaching over 10 % certified efficiency under standard solar illumination conditions (AM 1.5, 1000 W/m2). Recently, the liquid electrolyte, commonly used in these dye-sensitised solar cells, could successfully be replaced by a novel solid hole-conducting materi

Information for phase identification may be gathered in the electron transmission microscope with spatial resolution down to the nanometre scale. Energy dispersive X-ray and electron energy loss spectrometries are based on inelastic electron/sample interaction. They have the advantage to give a direct knowledge of the chemical nature of the atoms under the electron probe, sometimes also with valence and bonding, but concentrations are mean values over all atoms in the excited volume that may be insufficient

Photoinduced electron transfer from organic dye molecules to semiconductor nanoparticles is the first and most important reaction step for the mechanism in the so called “wet solar cells” [1]. The time scale between the photoexcitation of the dye and the electron injection into the conduction band of the semiconductor colloid varies from a few tens of femtoseconds to nanoseconds, depending on the specific electron transfer parameters of the system, e.g., electronic coupling or free energy values of donor an

During the past five years, we have developed in our laboratory a new type of solar cell that is based on a photoelectrochemical process. The light absorption is performed by a monolayer of dye (i.e., a Ruthenium complex) that is adsorbed chemically at the surface of a semiconductor (i.e., titanium oxide (TiO2)). When excited by a photon, the dye has the ability to transfer an electron to the semiconductor. The electric field that is inside the material allows extraction of the electron, and the positive ch
