This work aims to develop a scalable surrogate modelling framework for robust multidisciplinary design optimisation (RMDO) in complex engineering systems. Focusing on gas-bearing supported rotors, it addresses the need to maintain system performance under ...

Image steganalysis, detecting hidden data in digital images, is essential for enhancing digital security. Traditional steganalysis methods typically rely on large, pre-labeled image datasets, which are difficult and costly to compile. To address this, this ...

For robots to operate in unstructured environments, they are required to interact with objects through contact. Those contacts may be used to push objects to the side, deform objects, or manipulate objects in-hand. This thesis addresses the problem of cont ...

A major challenge to deploying robots widely is navigation in human-populated environments, commonly referred to as social robot navigation. While the field of social navigation has advanced tremendously in recent years, the fair evaluation of algorithms t ...

The identification of reaction kinetics represents the main challenge in building models for reaction systems. The identification task can be performed via either simultaneous model identification (SMI) or incremental model identification (IMI), the latter ...

Photorealistic synthetic data and novel rendering techniques significantly advanced computer vision research. However, datasets focused on computer vision applications cannot be easily applied to robotics because they typically lack physics-related informa ...

We are interested in the study of non-correlation of Fourier coefficients of Maass forms against a wide class of real analytic functions. In particular, the class of functions we are interested in should be thought of as some archimedean analogs of Frobeni ...

Typical legged locomotion controllers are designed or trained offline. This is in contrast to many animals, which are able to locomote at birth, and rapidly improve their locomotion skills with few real-world interactions. Such motor control is possible th ...

Fiber reinforced polymer confined-recycled aggregate concrete filled steel tube (FRP-RACFST) not only proposes excellent load-bearing capacity and corrosion resistance, but is also an environmentally friendly structure due to the incorporation of recycled ...

Computational models have been widely employed to study the electrical stimulation of the nervous system. Still, most applications either study fundamental mechanisms underlying stimulation, or address qualitative scientific questions. When quantitative qu ...

The Hall Effect sensors are one of the most commonly used sensing technologies today. They are employed in many applications for direct magnetic field sensing and serve a multitude of low power applications within automotive and industrial electronics as c ...

We propose Grab-UCB, a graph-kernelmulti-arms bandit algorithm to learn online the optimal source placement in large scale networks, such that the reward obtained from a priori unknown network processes is maximized. The uncertainty calls for online learni ...

Rock avalanches are processes involving a huge amount of mobilised material, larger than 106 m3, and their propagation is characterised by a very high energy, such that no active mitigation measure is capable of protecting human lives and properties potent ...

Positron emission tomography is a nuclear imaging technique well known for its use in oncology for cancer diagnosis and staging. A PET scanner is a complex machine which comprises photodetectors placed in a ring configuration that detect gamma photons gen ...

We consider expected performances based on max-stable random fields and we are interested in their derivatives with respect to the spatial dependence parameters of those fields. Max-stable fields, such as the Brown-Resnick and Smith fields, are very popula ...

A Dirichlet problem for orthogonal Hessians in two dimensions is explicitly solved, by characterizing all piecewise C-2 functions u Omega subset of R-2 -> R with orthogonal Hessian in terms of a property named "second order angle condition" as in (1 1) ...

Since the 70s, there has been a growing interest in activity-based modelling. This approach models the need to travel as a result of performing daily activities (Bowman and Ben-Akiva, 2001). Nevertheless, the activities need to be scheduled which involves ...

We consider quasilinear systems of second order elliptic equations on R-N. Using a continuation theorem based on the topological degree for C-1-Fredholm maps, we derive global properties of a maximal connected set of solutions which decay exponentially to ...

Fuzzers aware of the input grammar can explore deeper program states using grammar-aware mutations. Existing grammar-aware fuzzers are ineffective at synthesizing complex bug triggers due to: (i) grammars introducing a sampling bias during input generation ...

This study presents the development and evaluation of a novel shell-and-tube heat exchanger (STHX) design with segmental porous baffles. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in combination with machine learning tools are utilized to investigate the thermo-hy ...
