A shortcut model is a low-order model that provides a simplified representation of a complex process, thereby enabling faster and more efficient analysis, design and optimization without the computational intensity of a full-scale model. For continuous dis ...

We discuss the multiscale modeling of a granular material trapped between continuum elastic domains. The amorphous granular region, usually termed “gouge,” is under high confinement pressure, to represent the loading of faults at depth. We model the granul ...

Robust and distributionally robust optimization are modeling paradigms for decision-making under uncertainty where the uncertain parameters are only known to reside in an uncertainty set or are governed by any probability distribution from within an ambigu ...

Human babies have a natural desire to interact with new toys and objects, through which they learn how the world around them works, e.g., that glass shatters when dropped, but a rubber ball does not. When their predictions are proven incorrect, such as whe ...

We formulate computed-tomography reconstruction as a continuous-domain optimization problem with Hessian total variation (HTV) as the regularizer. HTV is a sparsity-promoting regularizer that favors continuous and piecewise-linear functions with few affine ...

This thesis develops mathematical programming frameworks to operate electric autonomous vehicles in the context of ride-sharing services. The introduced problem is a novel variant of the Dial-a-Ride Problem (DARP), denoted by the electric Autonomous Dial-a ...

Metallic aluminium plays a key role in our modern economy. Primary metallic aluminium is produced by the transformation of aluminium oxide using the Hall-Héroult industrial process. This process, which requires enormous quantities of energy, consists in pe ...

The goal of this thesis is the development and the analysis of numerical methods for problems where the unknown is a curve on a smooth manifold. In particular, the thesis is structured around the three following problems: homotopy continuation, curve inter ...

We propose an online algorithm for sequential learning in the contextual multiarmed bandit setting. Our approach is to partition the context space and, then, optimally combine all of the possible mappings between the partition regions and the set of bandit ...

Deep learning (DL) has been wildly successful in practice, and most of the state-of-the-art machine learning methods are based on neural networks (NNs). Lacking, however, is a rigorous mathematical theory that adequately explains the amazing performance of ...

Orthogonal maps are the solutions of the mathematical model of paper-folding, also called the origami problem. They consist of a system of first-order fully nonlinear equations involving the gradient of the solution. The Dirichlet problem for orthogonal ma ...

In this article, we consider decentralized optimization problems where agents have individual cost functions to minimize subject to subspace constraints that require the minimizers across the network to lie in low-dimensional subspaces. This constrained fo ...

A moving mesh approach is employed to simulate two-phase flow with phase change. The mathematical model is based on the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description of the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations and energy conservation. These equations are ...

Explicit time integration schemes coupled with Galerkin discretizations of time-dependent partial differential equations require solving a linear system with the mass matrix at each time step. For applications in structural dynamics, the solution of the li ...

The replicating portfolio (RP) approach to the calculation of capital for life insurance portfolios is an industry standard. The RP is obtained from projecting the terminal loss of discounted asset–liability cash flows on a set of factors generated by a fa ...

This paper is set out to establish the foundations for developing a framework to assess the potential impact of social policy innovation to contribute to the debate on the future of welfare systems. This calls in fact for monitoring the evolution of social ...

Background: Simulating the cardiac function requires the numerical solution of multi-physics and multi-scale mathematical models. This underscores the need for streamlined, accurate, and high-performance computational tools. Despite the dedicated endeavors ...

Francis turbines with medium or high specific speeds may experience a particular type of instability in the upper part load in which the precessing vortex has an elliptical shape. The occurrence of the upper part-load instability (UPLI) is accompanied by l ...

This paper presents a distributed shadow dynamic consensus (DSDC) framework to address the generation company (GENCO) strategic bidding problem in the independent system operator (ISO) operation. First, each sub-group is defined according to the communicat ...

Extracting microanatomical information beyond the image resolution of MRI would provide valuable tools for diagnostics and neuroscientific research. A number of mathematical models already suggest microstructural interpretations of diffusion MRI (dMRI) dat ...
