The fatigue provisions for bridge design in North America and Europe are highly simplified for the sake of practical implementation, in comparison with the state of the art in understanding of the true fatigue behavior. Historically, one significant simpli ...

This chapter explores touristic infrastructures as politics of ambiance, paying attention to the way they enable urban environment and engage pedestrians to experience cities critically. This issue will be documented through an ethnographic study of two to ...

The vibrational response of solid materials and structural components is substantially governed by their mechanical and geometrical properties. Low-frequency vibrations and modal frequencies are sensitive to global geometrical deviations, while high-freque ...

All-optical poling enables reconfigurable and efficient quasi-phase-matching for second-order parametric frequency conversion in silicon nitride integrated photonics. Here, we report broadly tunable milliwatt-level second-harmonic generation in a small fre ...

Nonlinear frequency conversion processes, such as second-harmonic generation (SHG) and spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), are essential in many applications, including the generation of entangled photons. It's desirable to enhance these process ...

Ultra-High-Performance Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composite (UHPFRC) has recently been used to design lightweight structures and strengthen existing ones, with more than 300 applications in Switzerland. Several composite timber-UHPFRC bridges have been ...

Flexure-based mechanisms have become state-of-the-art solutions for the design of high-precision mechanisms, free from friction wear, backlash, and lubrication. These properties which are necessary for applications in ultraclean or harsh environments, neve ...

Reciprocity guarantees that in most media, sound transmission is symmetric between two points of space when the location of the source and receiver are interchanged. This fundamental law can be broken in non-linear media, often at the cost of detrimental i ...

In engineering, oscillatory instabilities and resonances are often considered undesirable flow features and measures are taken to avoid them. This may include avoiding certain parametric regions or implementing control and mitigation strategies. However, t ...

Moving walkways are pedestrian dedicated hardware which generally decrease pedestrian travel time. We propose the utilization of these devices to dynamically control pedestrian flows in order to improve pedestrian dynamics. Three variations of a control st ...

Forecasting pedestrians' future motions is essential for autonomous driving systems to safely navigate in urban areas. However, existing prediction algorithms often overly rely on past observed trajectories and tend to fail around abrupt dynamic changes, s ...

Bridges are a critical component of national infrastructures and economies. A significant percentage of bridges built all around the world are made of reinforced concrete which according to building codes have a life span between 80-100 years. However, str ...

Autonomous mobility devices such as transport, cleaning, and delivery robots, hold a massive economic and social benefit. However, their deployment should not endanger bystanders, particularly vulnerable populations such as children and older adults who ar ...

Prediction of ground motion triggered by earthquakes is a prime concern for both the seismology community and geotechnical earthquake engineering one. The subfield occupied with such a problem is termed site response analysis (SRA), its one-dimensional fla ...

Pedestrians, like drivers, generally dislike congestion. This is true for most pedestrian environments: trains stations, airports, or shopping malls. Furthermore, pedestrian congestion also influences the attractiveness of public transportation networks. T ...

We demonstrate seeding-enabled all-optical poling of silicon nitride waveguides as short as 5 mm, and account for quasi-phase-matching (QPM) inside the waveguide between the fundamental mode of pump and higher order second-harmonic modes. ...

Existing bridges in reinforced concrete (RC) need to be enhanced in order to comply with utilization and safety requirements of future use, in particular for higher traffic loads. Such enhancements comprise strengthening to increase the structural resistan ...

The modeling of walking behavior and design of walk-friendly urban pathways have been of interest to many researchers over the past decades. One of the major issues in pedestrian modeling is path planning decision-making in a dynamic walking environment wi ...

Exploiting the full potential of pedestrian infrastructure is becoming critical in many environments which cannot be easily expanded to cope with the increasing pedestrian demand. This is particularly true for train stations as in many dense cities space i ...

Pedestrian mobility is at the center of urban transportation systems. Therefore, understanding it is a necessary task to improve the mobility in cities. However, pedestrian mobility is extremely complex, and advance methods are needed to capture its dynami ...
