This study investigates the fracture behavior of thick adhesive joints manufactured with composite adherends and bonded with an epoxy-based structural adhesive common to the wind turbine industry. For that purpose, double cantilever beam specimens with an ...

The stress state is an important parameter in terms of both earthquake nucleation and rupture. Here, a new stimulation technique is proposed for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGSs), which have previously been burdened with a number of high-profile incidence ...

Within the frame of the revision of the Eurocode 2 for concrete structures, the section devoted to strut-and-tie design has been up-dated to enhance its applicability, its consistency with other sections and its ease-of-use. As a result, a number of change ...

The mechanism-of-action of many electrohilic drugs remains poorly understood. Here, the authors use a redox-targeting approach to elucidate the basis for the innate immune cell toxicity of dimethyl fumarate, showing that it modifies Keap1 to trigger mitoch ...

Background: Adaptive recovery from stress promotes healthy cognitive affective functioning, whereas maladaptive recovery is linked to poor psychological outcomes. Neural regions, like the anterior cingulate and hippocampus, play critical roles in psychosoc ...

The objective of this thesis is to improve methods for predicting the fatigue life, multiaxial or not, of mild- and more particularly high-strength steels using local approaches that have the capacity to be applicable to almost any cases, hence the term ge ...

The propagation of fluid driven fractures is used in a number of industrial applications (well stimulation of unconventional reservoirs, development of deep geothermal systems) but also occurs naturally (magmatic dyke intrusion). While the mechanics of hyd ...

The nuclear factor erythroid 2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling axis is a target of covalent drugs and bioactive native electrophiles. However, much of our understanding of Nrf2 regulation has been focused at the protein level. Here we report a post-trans ...

Background: Metabolic side effects induced by psychotropic drugs represent a major health issue in psychiatry. CREB-regulated transcription coactivator 1 (CRTC1) gene plays a major role in the regulation of energy homeostasis and epigenetic mechanisms may ...

Vibration mode and resonance frequency of piezoelectric MEMS ultrasonic sensors was investigated on buckled diaphragm structures. The buckling of the diaphragms was introduced intrinsically through residual stress control of the piezoelectric film, and ext ...

The variation of pressure of the blood is a key parameter in the development of ventricular assist device. This latter is useful in order to synchronize the behavior of the actuator with the cardiac frequency. This paper presents a sensor made of a dielect ...

In the fabrication of heat-treatable aluminum parts such as AA2618 compressor impellers for turbochargers, solutionizing and quenching are key steps to obtain the required mechanical characteristics. Fast quenching is necessary to avoid coarse precipitatio ...

Concentrated colloidal suspensions of silica particles in polyethylene glycol exhibit a shear thickening behavior: above a critical shear rate in a confined environment, they show a steep increase of viscosity. This reversible transition from a low to a hi ...

Exposure to stress can affect the establishment of dominance hierarchies. In our model, a social hierarchy established by two male rats during a first encounter is not maintained 1 week later. If one of the two rats is stressed, the stressed rat becomes su ...

The coupling between cardiac mechanics and electric signaling is addressed in a nonstandard framework in which the electrical potential dictates the active strain (not stress) of the muscle. The physiological and mathematical motivations leading us to this ...

This work compares the time dependence of isothermal shape recovery in thermoset and thermoplastic shape memory polyurethanes (SMPUs) with comparable glass transition temperatures. In each case, tensile tests have been used to quantify the influence of var ...

Stress has been shown to modulate many aspects of physiology and behavior. In particular, substantial work has confirmed that stress is a strong modulator of learning and memory processes. It is more than a century that Yerkes and Dodson have shown that re ...

Damage induced by desiccation (i.e. drying shrinkage and cracking) is an issue to be investigated in deep geological nuclear waste storage engineering. A dried and cracked zone can form in the underground gallery host shale due to ventilation effects. Incr ...

The definition of a consistent stress framework is an essential prerequisite to the constitutive modelling of unsaturated soils. It is proposed to clarify the effective stress lexicon commonly used for unsaturated soils, one of the purposes being to contri ...

In this study, we examined whether chronic stress in adulthood can exert long-term effects on spatial-cognitive abilities and on the survival of newborn hippocampal cells in aging animals. Male Wistar rats were subjected to chronic unpredictable stress at ...
