The paper details the process of developing the ITER Plasma Control System (PCS), that is, how to design and deploy it systematically, in the most efficient and effective manner. The integrated nature of the ITER PCS, with its multitude of coupled control ...

Modern manufacturing engineering is based on a ``design-through-analysis'' workflow. According to this paradigm, a prototype is first designed with Computer-aided-design (CAD) software and then finalized by simulating its physical behavior, which usually i ...

With the continuous improvement of system scale and complexity, model-based system engineering (MBSE) is of great importance in the practice of system engineering (SE). MBSE has been widely concerned in industry, especially in the field of complex equipmen ...

The optimization of surface finish to improve performance, such as adhesion, friction, wear, fatigue life, or interfacial transport, occurs largely through trial and error, despite significant advancements in the relevant science. There are three central c ...

The use of model-based numerical simulations of wave propagation in rooms for engineering applications requires that acoustic conditions for multiple parameters are evaluated iteratively, which is computationally expensive. We present a reduced basis metho ...

Stabilized explicit methods are particularly efficient, for large systems of stiff stochastic differential equations (SDEs) due to their extended stability domain. However, they lose their efficiency when a severe stiffness is induced by very few "fast" de ...

A three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) model simulating the electrochemical behaviour of Pt coplanar thin-film electrodes used for liquid cell transmission electron microscopy measurements was developed. The model included reaction kinetics and it ...

The propagation of fluid driven fractures is used in a number of industrial applications (well stimulation of unconventional reservoirs, development of deep geothermal systems) but also occurs naturally (magmatic dyke intrusion). While the mechanics of hyd ...

In this paper, we present a problem structuring method in business and IT analysis illustrated with an example. The project describes an IT consulting case done for a Swiss medical society faced with a problem of change management and digital transformatio ...

This paper describes a new numerical method for the simulation of phase change phenomena between a liquid and a vapour in the presence of non-condensable gases. The method is based on an interface-tracking approach in the framework of single-fluid modellin ...

Multiscale problems, such as modelling flows through porous media or predicting the mechanical properties of composite materials, are of great interest in many scientific areas. Analytical models describing these phenomena are rarely available, and one mus ...

We present a technique for eliciting requirements based on the use of a service canvas and the results of its application in the early phase of a customer relationship management integration project. The project was a collaboration between a research group ...

In this paper we present the methodology implemented for analyzing System Requirements and Interfaces of the Heating and Current Drive (HCD) system of the European Demonstration Fusion Power Reactor DEMO. The work consisted in updating the preliminary fram ...

The use of interactive tools combined with remote laboratories has shown to be very useful for students when offered in a MOOC. The EPFL hands-on Control MOOC enables students to switch back and forth between control and observation on a remote laboratory, ...

Despite the traction gained by the open data movement and the rise of big data and learning analytics in education, there is limited support for researchers in education to generate, access, and share experimental data using openly-available digital educat ...

In the present work we introduce a complete set of algorithms to efficiently perform adaptive refinement and coarsening by exploiting truncated hierarchical B-splines (THB-splines) defined on suitably graded isogeometric meshes, that are called admissible ...

This position paper is an outcome of discussions that took place at the third FIPSE Symposium in Rhodes, Greece, between June 20-22, 2016 (http://fi-in-pse.org). The FIPSE objective is to discuss open research challenges in topics of Process Systems Engine ...

An accurate estimation of the stress in a steel liner is required for the design of steel-lined pressure shafts, both with regard to safety assessment of ageing steel-lined waterways of hydropower plants built in the 20th century, and for new projects whic ...

In the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium, the Work Package Heating and Current Drive (WPHCD) is undertaking the development and design of the DEMO Heating and Current Drive (HCD) system, supported by the Work Package Plant Level Systems Engineering, D ...

This paper discusses the technical challenges and trade-offs tied to design of medium frequency transformers (MFTs) for medium-voltage (MV) high-power (HP) power electronic applications, namely emerging solid state transformers (SSTs). A detailed analysis ...
