Accessing the low-energy non-equilibrium dynamics of materials and their polaritons with simultaneous high spatial and temporal resolution has been a bold frontier of electron microscopy in recent years. One of the main challenges lies in the ability to re ...

Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM) has become an essential tool to study polaritons—quasiparticles of light coupled to collective charge oscillations—via direct probing of their near field with a spatial resolution far beyond t ...

A photonic assembly, a laser setup comprising said photonic assembly and a method for performing frequency-modulated continuous-wave light detection and ranging using said laser setup are disclosed. The photonic assembly (1) comprises an active photonic ch ...

We study and demonstrate a Bloch-surface-wave-based nano-thin waveguide grating. The waveguide grating is characterized as a Bragg mirror at telecommunication wavelengths. The structure is a dielectric multilayer platform designed to sustain a Bloch surfac ...

High-resolution imaging in thick biological tissues beyond a few transport mean free path of photons remains a formidable challenge to modern science and technology. Recent advancements in optical tomography have enabled the reconstruction of the three-dim ...

Bloch surface waves (BSWs) are sustained at the interface of a suitably designed one-dimensional (1D) dielectric photonic crystal and an ambient material. The elements that control the propagation of BSWs are defined by a spatially structured device layer ...

We present a different type of electromagnetic surface wave than a surface plasmon polariton (SPP), called Bloch surface wave (BSW). BSWs are sustained by dielectric multilayers, and therefore they do not suffer from dissipation. Their propagation length i ...

The ability to control and manipulate light is a fundamental aspect that is at the very core of the development of integrated photonic circuits. It is desirable to achieve such control down to a scale that is comparable to or smaller than the wavelength of ...

Brillouin scattering is an interaction between light and sound in a material. This inelastic light scattering had been observed in the first optical fibres that were used in cross-continent communication. Via Brillouin scattering, the guided light wave in ...

Background: The periodic dielectric multilayers sustaining Bloch surface waves have been proposed as a platformfor the sensing applications and the two dimensional integrated optics. In this paper, we present the experimental and theoretical investigation ...

Microsized spheres can focus light into subwavelength spatial domains, a phenomenon called photonic nanojet. Even though well studied in three-dimensional (3D) configurations, only a few attempts have been reported to observe similar phenomena in two-dimen ...

Bloch surface waves (BSWs) are surface electromagnetic modes that propagate at the interface between a multilayer substrate and a homogeneous external medium. The optical field of the surface mode is confined near the surface of the multilayer. This vertic ...

Nano-photonics, where optical structures can manipulate light at the sub-wavelength scale, is making important advances towards optical communications, imaging and sensing. A novel platform suitable for fundamental investigations of light propagation throu ...

An electron beam traversing a structured plasmonic field is shown to undergo diffraction with characteristic angular patterns of both elastic and inelastic outgoing electron components. In particular, a plasmonic grating (e.g., a standing wave formed by tw ...

Bloch surface waves (BSWs) are electromagnetic surface waves excited in the band gap of a one dimensional dielectric photonic crystal. They are confined at the interface of two media. Due to the use of dielectric material, the losses are very low, which al ...

Optical frequency references are devices providing well-defined and stable optical frequency responses to incoming radiation for applications such as high-precision spectroscopy and optical fibre communications. To stabilise the emission frequency of laser ...

We present a direct evidence of Bloch surface waves (BSWs) waveguiding on ultrathin polymeric ridges, supported by near-field measurements. It is demonstrated that near-infrared BSWs sustained by a silicon-based multilayer can be locally coupled and guided ...

In this work, we use a multi-heterodyne scanning near-field optical microscope to investigate the polarization and propagation of Bloch surface waves in an ultrathin (similar to lambda/10) ridge waveguide. First, we show that the structure sustains three s ...

The present invention discloses a method and an apparatus to compute a complex wavefield, referred to as the object wave o, by means of measuring the intensity signal resulting from the interference of the said object wave with a second wave termed the ref ...

Dynamic control of the speed of a light signal, based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers, was theoretically studied and also experimentally demonstrated as the core object of this thesis. To date, slow light based on stimulated Brillouin ...
