Mountain regions face a variety of natural hazards that menace infrastructure and the people living in these areas. Human activity in these areas is intensifying, making hazard analysis and risk mitigation critical. Switzerland, with its densely populated ...

Reinforced concrete flat slabs consist of a continuous, thin concrete plate that rests on a grid of columns. The supporting surface of the columns is very small compared to the floor plan dimensions, leading to concentrations of shear forces near the colum ...

Image information about the state of a building after an earthquake, which can be collected without endangering the post-earthquake reconnaissance activities, can be used to reduce uncertainties in response predictions for future seismic events. This paper ...

Prequalified beam-to-column connections in steel moment resisting frames usually concentrate inelastic deformations in the steel beam ends. As such, nonlinear geo-metric instabilities (i.e., local buckling) may occur in these regions at modest lateral drif ...

While ventricular electromechanics is extensively studied in both physiological and pathological conditions, four-chamber heart models have only been addressed recently; most of these works however neglect atrial contraction. Indeed, as atria are character ...

In capacity designed steel moment resisting frames (MRFs), beam-to-column joints (i.e., panel zones) are designed to remain elastic. To potentially exploit the beneficial aspects of the stable panel zone hysteretic response in shear, a robust panel zone mo ...

Activity-based models offer the potential of a far deeper understanding of daily mobility behaviour than trip-based models. However, activity-based models used both in research and practice have often relied on applying sequential choice models between sub ...

Strengthening of flat slab-column connections to resist imposed lateral drifts is often required for older reinforced concrete structures in which the flat slabs were typically designed to resist gravity load only or have been designed for less stringent r ...

Long global gyrokinetic turbulence simulations are particularly challenging in situations where the system deviates strongly from its initial state and when fluctuation levels are high, for example, in strong gradient regions. For particle-in-cell simulati ...

We demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of a recently introduced approach to account for nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) in molecular simulations: the adaptive quantum thermal bath (adQTB). In this method, zero-point energy is introduced through a genera ...

Motivated by the seismic response of unanchored liquid storage tanks, their uplift mechanism under strong lateral loading is examined. Using three-dimensional finite element models, nonlinear static analysis is conducted to define the moment-rotation relat ...

Enhanced sampling techniques have become an essential tool in computational chemistry and physics, where they are applied to sample activated processes that occur on a time scale that is inaccessible to conventional simulations. Despite their popularity, i ...

Seismic assessments of historical masonry buildings are affected by several sources of epistemic uncertainty. These are mainly the material and the modelling parameters and the displacement capacity of the elements. Additional sources of uncertainty lie in ...

The seismic performance of buildings depends critically on the stiffness and strength of storey diaphragms. Whilst for modern reinforced concrete or steel structures the connection between floors and lateral resisting members is often assumed as monolithic ...

Traditional wood-wood connections, widely used in the past, have been progressively replaced by steel fasteners and bonding processes in modern timber constructions. However, the emergence of digital fabrication and innovative engineered timber products ha ...

This paper presents the results of a series of shake table tests carried out on a half-scale single-story unreinforced masonry building with asymmetric openings. First, the unretrofitted building is subjected to seven increasing steps of bidirectional seis ...

In this paper, we present a mathematical model able to simulate the cardiac function. We first describe the basic physical principles behind the mathematical equations, then we illustrate a few examples of application to problems of clinical relevance. ...

A large number of buildings in regions with low to medium seismic hazard have been designed without considering earthquake actions. Retrofitting of all buildings that fail to meet modern code requirements is economically, technically and environmentally un ...

Geometrically complex timber plate structures using wood-wood connections are increasingly designed thanks to digital fabrication. Whereas their fabrication has been automated using computer-aided design programming, research focused on the development of ...

This paper discusses the design of load-bearing systems for buildings with regard to their current lack of open-ended reusability. The reason for dismantling load-bearing systems today tends to be less related to material degradation than to a loss of func ...
