Macroscopic fundamental diagrams (MFDs) have been widely adopted to model the traffic flow of large-scale urban networks. Coupling perimeter control and regional route guidance (PCRG) is a promising strategy to decrease congestion heterogeneity and reduce ...

Literature on linear induction motors (LIMs) has proposed several approaches to model the behavior of such devices for different applications. In terms of accuracy and fidelity, field analysis-based models are the most relevant. Closed-form or numerical so ...

Rare events include many of the most interesting transformation processes in condensed matter, from phase transitions to biomolecular conformational changes to chemical reactions. Access to the corresponding mechanisms, free-energy landscapes and kinetic r ...

This dissertation introduces traffic forecasting methods for different network configurations and data availability. Chapter 2 focuses on single freeway cases. Although its topology is simple, the non-linearity of traffic features makes this prediction sti ...

Isogeometric analysis (IGA) was introduced to integrate methods for analysis and computer-aided design (CAD) into a unified process. High-quality parameterization of a physical domain plays a crucial role in IGA. However, obtaining high-quality parameteriz ...

City-level traffic management remains a challenging problem. Model predictive perimeter control approaches employing macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) based models of large-scale urban road traffic represent a high-performance solution with substantial ...

Multiscale problems, such as modelling flows through porous media or predicting the mechanical properties of composite materials, are of great interest in many scientific areas. Analytical models describing these phenomena are rarely available, and one mus ...

Transient cavities generated from unsteady leading-edge cavitation may undergo aggressive collapses which are responsible for cavitation erosion. In this paper, we studied the hydrodynamic mechanisms of these events in the leading edge cavitation formed ov ...

Shark-X is a set of Perl-based tools build around the deterministic neutron transport code CASMO-5, used to perform uncertainty quantification for lattice calculations at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). While perturbing an input parameter, e.g. a cross s ...

The evaluation of perimeter control using Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) concept is strongly related with the quality of the corresponding dynamic models. For capturing the real characteristics of traffic dynamics, an enhanced accumulation-based tra ...

Women remain significantly underrepresented in engineering education, a cultural milieu which is stereotypically seen as a masculine domain. Laboratory studies and some questionnaire-based studies suggest being numerically under- or overrepresented in stud ...

Numerical investigation of the unsteady flow patterns around the bucket can be helpful to improve the Pelton turbine efficiency. In fact, by studying the loss mechanisms in the flow, one can optimize the bucket design. For this purpose, an accurate investi ...

We consider the numerical approximation of lipid biomembranes at equilibrium described by the Canham-Helfrich model, according to which the bending energy is minimized under area and volume constraints. Energy minimization is performed via L-2-gradient flo ...

A comprehensive understanding of physical phenomena based on a hybrid experimental-numerical approach supports a safer design of critical infrastructures. However, for large-scale tsunami-like waves, the reliability of numerical models was insufficiently v ...

A smart design of transport systems involves efficient use and allocation of the limited urban road capacity in the multimodal environment. This paper intends to understand the system-wide effect of dividing the road space to the private and public transpo ...

In this paper, we propose a monolithic algorithm for the numerical solution of the electromechanics model of the left ventricle in the human heart. Our coupled model integrates the monodomain equation with the Bueno-Orovio minimal model for electrophysiolo ...

In a recent paper [Ray and Hesthaven, J. Comput. Phys. 367 (2018), pp 166-191], we proposed a new type of troubled-cell indicator to detect discontinuities in the numerical solutions of one-dimensional conservation laws. This was achieved by suitably train ...

Programmable multistable mechanisms (PMM) exhibit a modifiable stability behavior in which the number of stable states, stiffness, and reaction force characteristics are controlled via their programming inputs. In this paper, we present experimental charac ...

The Task 7 of the EBS task force is devoted to the modelling of gas transport phenomena in saturated bentonite. It was launched mid‐2016 with the following objectives: - To survey existing modelling tools for the simulation of gas migration in saturated be ...

In this thesis, a computational approach is used to study two-phase flow including phase change by direct numerical simulation. This approach follows the interface with an adaptive moving mesh. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved, in tw ...
