Beliefs inform the behaviour of forward-thinking agents in complex environments. Recently, sequential Bayesian inference has emerged as a mechanism to study belief formation among agents adapting to dynamical conditions. However, we lack critical theory to ...

Recommendations with personalized explanations have been shown to increase user trust and perceived quality and help users make better decisions. Moreover, such explanations allow users to provide feedback by critiquing them. Several algorithms for recomme ...

In Alan Westin's generally accepted definition of privacy, he describes it as an individual's right 'to control, edit, manage, and delete information about them[selves] and decide when, how, and to what extent information is communicated to others.' There ...

Web Search is increasingly entity centric; as a large fraction of common queries target specific entities, search results get progressively augmented with semi-structured and multimedia information about those entities. However, search over personal web br ...

In this paper, we introduce a navigation privacy attack, where an external adversary attempts to find a target user by exploiting publicly visible attributes of intermediate users. If such an attack is successful, it implies that a user cannot hide simply ...

We present the design and evaluation of an iPad application that will be used to operate the modular robots “Roombots”. Roombots are the building blocks for adaptive pieces of furniture. The application allows a user to arrange adaptive furniture within a ...

Recommender systems have emerged as an effective decision tool to help users more easily and quickly find products that they prefer, especially in e-commerce environments. However, few studies have tried to understand how this technology has influenced the ...

User interaction with online geospatial systems is an inter-disciplinary research field that combines the two disciplines Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and geographic information sciences. In recent years online geospatial systems have been created for ...

A critiquing-based recommender system acts like an artificial salesperson. It engages users in a conversational dialog where users can provide feedback in the form of critiques to the sample items that were shown to them. The feedback, in turn, enables the ...

Retrieving information from archived meetings is a new domain of information retrieval that has received increasing attention in the past few years. Search in spontaneous spoken conversations has been recognized as more difficult than text-based document r ...

Nowadays more and more people are looking for products online, and a massive amount of products are being sold through e-commerce systems. It is crucial to develop effective online product search tools to assist users to find their desired products and to ...

As online stores are offering an almost unlimited shelf space, users must increasingly rely on product search and recommender systems to find their most preferred products and decide which item is the truly best one to buy. However, much research work has ...

Computers have become affordable, small, omnipresent and are often connected to the Internet. However, despite the availability of such rich environments, user interfaces have not been adapted to fully leverage their potential. In our view, user interfaces ...

The internet provides an unprecedented variety of opportunities to people. Whether looking for a place to go on vacation, an apartment to rent, or a PC to buy, the potential customer is faced with countless possibilities. Most people have difficulty findin ...

Preference-based search (PBS) is a popular approach for helping consumers find their desired items from online catalogs. Currently most PBS tools generate search results by a certain set of criteria based on preferences elicited from the current user durin ...

With the ever growing importance of internet, people are becoming overwhelmed by information. More concretely, consider a situation where you find yourself with an evening alone and would like to rent a DVD to watch. For several reasons, this is a difficul ...

Users' critiques to the current recommendation form a crucial feedback mechanism for refining their preference models and improving a system's accuracy in recommendations that may better interest the user. In this paper, we present a novel approach to assi ...

Critiquing techniques provide an easy way for users to feedback their preferences over one or several attributes of the products in a conversational recommender system. While unit critiques only allow users to critique one attribute of the products each ti ...

We consider example-critiquing systems that help people search for their most preferred item in a large electronic catalog. We analyze how such systems can help users in the framework of four existing example-critiquing approaches (RABBIT, FindMe, Incremen ...

To make accurate recommendations, recommendation systems currently require more data about a customer than is usually available. We conjecture that the weaknesses are due to a lack of inductive bias in the learning methods used to build the prediction mode ...
