Climate changes influence lake hydrodynamics and radiation levels and thus may affect the fate and transport of waterborne pathogens in lakes. This study examines the impact of climate change on the fate, transport, and associated risks of four waterborne ...

The space industry has experienced substantial growth in recent years, leading to rapid advancements in space exploration and space-based technologies. Consequently, the study of electronics and sensor performance in extreme environments has become crucial ...

The SwissSPAD2/3 camera family is based on quarter megapixel single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) time gated imagers. The 16.38-µm low-noise pixels feature a single-bit memory and built-in all-solid-state nanosecond time gating without the need for externa ...

Ionizing and non-ionizing radiation is known to cause damages in electronic components, resulting in reduced performance and possible failure. This is a major issue for any application where electronics operate in a radioactive environment. An extreme exam ...

BackgroundThe increasing use of complex and high dose-rate treatments in radiation therapy necessitates advanced detectors to provide accurate dosimetry. Rather than relying on pre-treatment quality assurance (QA) measurements alone, many countries are now ...

Radon is a natural and radioactively well-known carcinogenic indoor air pollutant. Since 2020, a radon short-term proactive methodology has been proposed by Swiss authorities, which aims to evaluate the probability of overpassing the national reference val ...

A robust capacitive multisensory readout system is presented in this article. The system consists of a few thousand lossy capacitive-based sensors that can be modeled as a parallel connection of sensor capacitor and undesirable leakage resistance. The real ...

The next generation of high-energy physics (HEP) detectors will predominantly be silicon-based. As pixel sensor technology gains momentum and the number of channels surpasses one billion (for a volume of approximately 20 m3) to achieve the high resolution ...

Future fusion reactors require a safe, steady-state divertor operation. With deep divertor detachment, which is typically induced by impurity seeding, the radiation concentrates in a small region at the X-point or on closed flux surfaces above the X-point. ...

MALTA is a depleted monolithic active pixel sensor (DMAPS) developed in the Tower Semiconductor 180-nm CMOS imaging process. Monolithic CMOS sensors offer advantages over current hybrid imaging sensors in terms of both increased tracking performance due to ...

Radon is a noble, natural, and radioactive gas coming mainly from the ground which might accumulate indoors and lead each year to 200-300 deaths from lung cancer in Switzerland. A brand new and innovative living lab will be built as of 2023 in Fribourg (Sw ...

In this doctoral thesis, a promising technique has been used for the measurement of non-thermal electrons in TCV. The technique employs a Vertical viewing ECE to more easily discriminate the radiation according to the energy of the electrons. Successful ...

One challenge in designing RF wireless bioelectronic devices is the impact of the interaction between electromagnetic waves and host body tissues on far-field wireless performance. In this paper, we investigate a peculiar phenomenon of implantable RF wirel ...

Objective. Microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) is an alternative emerging radiotherapy treatment modality which has demonstrated effective radioresistant tumour control while sparing surrounding healthy tissue in preclinical trials. This apparent selectivity ...

A detailed MCNP neutronics model of the building housing the TCV tokamak has been developed. Predicted dose rates have been compared to neutron dose measurements at 12 locations in the building obtained during neutral beam injection into TCV plasmas. This ...

In this thesis, the development and testing of a system for measuring the axial distribution of fast neutron emission of spent nuclear fuel rods is presented. Emphasis is placed on the novel fast neutron detector used which can reliably work in extremely h ...

The Modular Multiplatform Compatible Air Measurement System (MoMuCAMS) is a newly developed in situ aerosol and trace gas measurement payload for lower atmospheric vertical profiling in extreme environments. MoMuCAMS is a multiplatform compatible system, p ...

A large-scale Scintillating Fibre Tracker has been developed and constructed for the current LHCb Upgrade 1. The high radiation by fast neutrons reduces the light yield of the detector in the course of LHC Run 3, and is challenging the tracker's hit detect ...

This article investigates the device variability induced by the total ionizing dose (TID) effects in a commercial 16-nm bulk nFinFETs, using specially designed test structures and measurement procedures aimed at maximizing the matching between devices. DC ...

To achieve the physics goals of future colliders, it is necessary to develop novel, radiation-hard silicon sensors for their tracking detectors. We target the replacement of hybrid pixel detectors with Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (DMAPS) that ...
