In this paper, we present metriplectic extensions of the Lie–Poisson dynamics of fluid flows over the unit annulus for both the Lebesgue [Formula: see text]-pairing and the Sobolev [Formula: see text]-pairing. Several examples are provided including 2D Nav ...

Hydraulic short circuit (HSC), corresponding to the simultaneous operation of the pumps and turbines, enhances the power flexibility of a pumped storage power plant (PSPP). However, comprehensive analyses are imperative to guarantee a secure and reliable o ...

The interstellar medium in the Milky Way's Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) is known to be strongly magnetised, but its large-scale morphology and impact on the gas dynamics are not well understood. We explore the impact and properties of magnetic fields in th ...

The quasi-brittle nature of rocks challenges the basic assumptions of linear hydraulic fracture mechanics (LHFM): namely, linear elastic fracture mechanics and smooth parallel plates lubrication fluid flow inside the propagating fracture. We relax these hy ...

It is a complex task to evaluate the effects of a river rehabilitation measure on the riverscape’s habitat mosaic. This study investigated the medium term effects of a rehabilitation measure in a residual flow reach downstream of a hydroelectric dam. The r ...

We study the self-propulsion of a charged colloidal particle that releases ionic species using theory and experiments. We relax the assumptions of thin Debye length and weak nonequilibrium effects assumed in classical phoretic models. This leads to a numbe ...

Steep mountain streams exhibit shallow waters with roughness elements such as stones and pebbles that are comparable in size to flow depth. Owing to the difficulty in measuring fluid velocities at the interface, i.e., from the rough permeable bed to the fr ...

Arterial rupture in horses has been observed during exercise, after phenylephrine administration or during parturition (uterine artery). In human pathophysiological research, the use of computer models for studying arterial hemodynamics and understanding n ...

Dam failures, impulse waves, tsunamis and storm surges are disasters that challenge humanity, often leading to massive casualties and important economic losses. These events generate highly unsteady flow conditions in the form of surges or turbulent bores, ...

Microfluidic flow-focusing devices offer excellent control over fluid flow, enabling formation of drops with a narrow size distribution. However, the throughput of microfluidic flow-focusing devices is limited and scale-up through operation of multiple dro ...

Experimental and numerical studies are performed to characterise the dynamics of isolated confined air bubbles in laminar fully developed liquid flows within channels of diameters d = 0.5 mm and d = 1 mm. Water and glycerol are used as the continuous liqui ...

It is known that bedload fluctuates over time in steep rivers with wide grain size distributions, even under conditions of constant sediment feed and water discharge. Bedload fluctuations, which are a consequence of grain sorting, are periodic and are rela ...

We compare dynamical nonequilibrium molecular dynamics and continuum simulations of the dynamics of relaxation of a fluid system characterized by a non-uniform density profile. Results match quite well as long as the lengthscale of density nonuniformities ...

Lymphatic capillary drainage of interstitial fluid under both steady-state and inflammatory conditions is important for tissue fluid balance, cancer metastasis, and immunity. Lymphatic drainage function is critically coupled to the fluid mechanical propert ...

Acoustic Doppler instrument measurements suffer from random spikes and Doppler noise. Using a four-receiver ADV (acoustic Doppler velocimeter; Vectrino manufactured by Nortek) that allows recording beam velocities, we combine a spike-removal procedure on t ...

A constructaltree-shaped microchannel network for maximizing the saturated critical heat flux in a disc-shaped planar body has been investigated. n(0) radial channels touch the center and n(p) channels touch the periphery. Designs with no pairing level (n( ...

The deposition behavior of fine sediment is an important phenomenon, which remains unclear to engineers concerned about reservoir sedimentation. In the present case bed level changes, suspended sediment concentrations, and flow velocities were measured in ...

Gravity driven flows on inclines can be caused by cold, saline or turbid inflows into water bodies. Another example are cold downslope winds, which are caused by cooling of the atmosphere at the lower boundary. In a well-known contribution, Ellison and Tur ...

This thesis work aims to optimize the treatment of hydrocephalus. It consists of two distinct objectives: the optimization of the diagnosis of patients implanted with a shunt system for the derivation of cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) and the optimization of t ...

PURPOSE: To perform high speed and completely non-invasive 3D angiography at the optic nerve head region and to reconstruct vectorial 3D blood flow from optically segmented blood vessel structure as a pre-requisite for testing retinal function and physiolo ...
