The performance of three-dimensional (3D) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is predominantly limited by interfacial non-radiative recombination and instability. Although low-dimensional (LD) interlayers, particularly two-dimensional (2D) perovskites, are widely adopted for surface passivation, their heterogeneous n-values and quantum-well confinement often impede charge transport. One-dimensional (1D) perovskites offer a promising alternative due to their structural flexibility and superior passivation capabili

Tetraphenylethene (TPE) is a classic structural motif frequently incorporated into materials for optoelectronic devices due to its structural versatility. However, when used in perovskite solar cells, these TPE‐based layers exhibit suboptimal interfacial compatibility, leading to inefficient charge carrier extraction and reduced device stability. To address these issues, we have introduced hydrophobic fluorinated phenyl groups onto the TPE structure, electron transport interfacial materials, such as 1,1,2,2

Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into chemicals and fuels offers a promising route towards a circular carbon economy. High-temperature CO2 electroreduction in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) delivers high selectivity and energy efficiency, but suffers from a tradeoff between mechanical robustness and electrochemical activity. Here we resolve this constraint using a hybrid ionic-conductor architecture that decouples electrocatalysis, ionic transport and mechanical support into function-specific layer

We are pleased to present this special issue on Advances in Solar Energy: Special Issue on Perovskite Solar Cells, which covers invited reviews and research articles on the perovskite materials and devices. Prof. Miyasaki first invented perovskite solar cells with a device efficiency of 3.8 %, and swiftly crossed to over 26 % in a single junction device. In silicon/perovskite tandem, solar cells the efficiency reached over 34 %. The device efficiency reached by 40 % under low-light/ artificial indoor light

Perovskites solar cells (PSCs) have emerged, since 2009, as the most promising technology to replace/complement crystalline silicon PV.[1] Outstanding results of PCE up to 26.7 % have been obtained using perovskites (eg. MAPbI3) in just a few years of research. The continuous improvement of the efficiency in PSCs has been achieved using commercially available spiro-OMeTAD as hole-transporting material (HTM). However, spiro-OMeTAD is an expensive material due to its difficult purification and multi-step synt

We demonstrate high-efficiency perovskite–silicon tandem solar cells using double-sided tunnel oxide passivated contacts (TOPCon2) bottom cells, achieving 30.2% efficiency on both-sides flat and 31.3% on front-textured devices. The former is enabled by high passivation quality on flat surfaces and the latter by enhanced optical performance. These results highlight that TOPCon2 is a promising platform for scalable tandem integration beyond silicon heterojunction-based bottom cells.

Spacecraft electrostatic discharge is a type of surface discharge in vacuum which is commonly known as vacuum surface flashover, posing a significant threat to the safe operation of spacecraft solar cells. This numerical study investigates vacuum surface flashover on spacecraft solar cells triggered by an inverted potential gradient (IPG), using particle-in-cell simulations. Incorporating the realistic solar cell structure [room temperature vulcanized (RTV) adhesive, cover glass, and metal interconnector] a

Interfacial instability—originating from defects, ion migration, and uncontrolled crystallization—remains a critical challenge for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Electron‐withdrawing materials (EWMs) have emerged as promising candidates for interface engineering due to their distinctive coordination capability and favorable charge extraction properties. This review outlines the fundamental characteristics of EWMs and the underlying mechanisms by which they enhance photovoltaic performance and device stabili

Solution-processable semiconductors like halide perovskites and certain molecules are promising for next-generation spin-optoelectronic applications [1]. Yet, we don’t fully understand what governs spin and light polarization in these materials, and even less how these are affected by chirality. In this talk, I will give an overview of our recent efforts to understand the spin-optoelectronic performance of these materials through time-, space- and polarization-resolved spectroscopy and microscopy. For inv

Carrier-selective, passivating contacts have allowed silicon heterojunction (SHJ) cells to reach recordbreaking efficiencies particularly in all-back-contacted designs. However, two-side-contacted SHJ cell efficiency has been limited due in part to parasit ...

Silicon heterojunction solar cells have less manufacturing steps and have allowed achieving higher efficiency than PERC cells. However the market has been slow in taking up the technology. Here we discuss some of the obstacles that have been overcome in the last 10 years and show why the technology is now more ready than ever for a mass market launch. This bases on improvements at the device level reaching 24% with few process steps, on the availability of high-quality low cost n-type c-Si wafers, on improv

We evaluate the performance of thin-film silicon micromorph tandem solar cells deposited on transparent superstrates with embossed micrometer-scale 2-D gratings. Once coated with a thin conductive layer of hydrogenated indium oxide, the textured superstrates can be used as 2-D periodic single-texture front electrodes. Combining these almost loss-free front electrodes with a highly transparent, random self-textured zinc oxide layer (with a thickness 1 um) deposited by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (

C-60 fullerene derivatives bearing aliphatic chains can self-assemble into versatile supramolecular structures. Cross-linking of such self-assembled morphologies is an attractive approach to enhance the structural stability of these self-organized structur ...

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) materials are increasingly used in building construction for the design of multifunctional structures. These composite materials allow the integration of structural functions, building physics functions (mainly thermal insulation) and architectural functions (complex forms and color) in single large-scale building components. GFRP materials also allow the fabrication of translucent structural components with high degree of transparency when optically aligned resins and

Inkjet-printing of solution-processable organic materials is a well-known fabrication method utilised to produce electronic devices on flexible substrates. It is especially suitable to realise, with a simple, digital layout design process, large-area devices with limited production costs [1]. Among the several different types of electronic devices already fabricated, a particularly important role is played by Organic Field Effect Transistors (OFETs) [2]. OFETs have been already proved to be capable to detec

Molecular self-assembly at metal surfaces has been recognized as an efficient strategy to create supramolecular nanoarchitectures with promising functionalities. The focus of this thesis lies on the strong electron accepting molecule 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquin ...

We present a new type of robot concept called swarm-bot, based on cooperative and swarm intelligence, that was developed within an interdisciplinary project sponsored by the Future and Emerging Technologies of the European Commission. A swarm-bot is an assembly of several mobile robots (called s-bots), which can operate both autonomously and as a group. The unique feature of the project is that s-bots can exploit physical interconnections to self-assemble into a bigger entity, a swarm-bot, capable of tackli

Over the past fifteen years dye-sensitised nanocrystalline solar cells have been the subject of intense research and development efforts. These systems provide a technically and economically credible alternative to classical p-n junction solar cells, reaching over 10 % certified efficiency under standard solar illumination conditions (AM 1.5, 1000 W/m2). Recently, the liquid electrolyte, commonly used in these dye-sensitised solar cells, could successfully be replaced by a novel solid hole-conducting materi

We present a new robotic concept, called SWARM-BOT, based on a swarm of small and simple autonomous mobile robots called S-BOTs. S-BOTs have a particular assembling capability that allows them to connect physically to other S-BOTs and form a bigger robot entity, the SWARM-BOT. A SWARM-BOT is typically composed by 10 to 30 S-BOTs physically interconnected. S-BOTs can autonomously assemble into a SWARM-BOT but also disassemble again. This feature of the S-BOTs provides SWARM-BOT with self-assembling and self-
