Textile electronics embedded in clothing represent an exciting new frontier for modern healthcare and communication systems. Fundamental to the development of these textile electronics is the development of the fibers forming the cloths into electronic dev ...

The widespread use of antibiotics and antifungal drugs has provoked an increasing number of multi-resistant bacteria and fungi. The emergence of multiresistance to antibiotics has been now recognized as a very serious public health issue. In order to targe ...

The spectra of Brillouin scattering processes in optical fibers are affected by temperature, axial strain, and other quantities of interest. This dependence forms the basis for optical Brillouin scattering based optical fiber sensors. Since the first propo ...

Optical fibers have reshaped the technological landscape, from optical networks and high-speed data communication to in situ imaging and non-invasive surgery methods. The revolution allowed by these fibers has been made possible by its fabrication method, ...

The possibility to perform distributed measurements of the effective refractive index difference between distinct modes in few mode optical fibers is demonstrated using phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometry. Effective refractive index differenc ...

The visual appearance of any colorized object is usually determined by the spectral absorption of either pigments or dyes. One can however also colorize objects with structural colors that typically have an iridescent appearance, as seen on many beetles. T ...

Owing to their high sensitivity with respect to external measurands, Rayleigh-based distributed optical fiber sensors (DOFS) find their way into applications in many industrial and academic sectors. To further transcend the limit of these sensors in terms ...

The temporal Talbot effect describes the periodic self-imaging of an optical pulse train along dispersive propagation. This is well studied in the context of bright pulse trains, where identical or multiplied pulse trains with uniform bright waveforms can ...

Optical waveguides are one of the most important photonic components. They are indispensable tools in many of todayâ s technologies because of their capacity of guiding light. In particular, compact, low loss, flexible polymer optical waveguides are cruci ...

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in mouse brain, paired with spatially and temporally defined manipulations, offers a powerful tool to causally explain the effect of specific neuronal activity on brain network dynamics. Here, we present an opti ...

Flexible electronics and particularly soft fibers and textiles are becoming key components in rapidly developing fields such as robotics, health and personal care, sensing, or implantable and wearable devices. Thus far however, the ability to impart soft a ...

We experimentally demonstrate Kramers-Kronig detection of four 20 Gbaud 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulated (QAM) channels after 50 km fiber transmission using two soliton Kerr combs as signal sources and local oscillators. The estimated carrier phase at the ...

Time-energy entangled photon pairs are fundamental resources for quantum communication protocols since they are robust against environmental fluctuations in optical fiber networks. Pair sources based on spontaneous four-wave mixing in silicon microring res ...

High light-quality and low color temperature are two crucial factors for a comfortable healthy illumination. Phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) could be readily realized by combining near-UV (380-420 nm) LED chips with tri-color phosphor ...

Standard multimode optical fibers normally support transmission over some 100 modes. Large differences in the propagation constant and the spatial distribution of distinct modes degrade the performance of phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry m ...

Multimode optical fibers are the backbone of telecommunication and medical imaging. When light with high intensity travels through a multimode fiber, photons and matter start to interact and propa-gation becomes nonlinear. The nonlinear propagation of ligh ...

Unlike traditional sensing schemes which rely on discrete point sensors that perform measurements at predetermined positions, distributed optical fiber sensing is a general technique that enables to continuously gather information (typically temperature an ...

The measurement and generation of mechanical deformations is a key functionality in health monitoring, human-machine interaction, and soft robotics. However, current methods typically rely on small and hard transducers, which result in poor performance, cu ...

Photonic chip-based soliton microcombs have shown rapid progress and have already been used in many system-level applications. There has been substantial progress in realizing soliton microcombs that rely on compact laser sources, culminating in devices th ...

How does one study the evolution of the Milky Way, or the expansion of the Universe, or explore the mysteries of Dark energy? To investigate these complex topics, astronomers require data, and a great deal of it, in the form of the spectra of stars, galaxi ...
