Concrete use in buildings significantly contributes to global CO2 emissions. Floor systems constitute a major portion of the concrete in building structures, making them a prime target for material reduction. Conventional design methods to calculate streng ...

Most codes of practice adopt a semi probabilistic design approach for the dimensioning and assessment of structures. Accordingly, structural safety is ensured by performing limit state verifications using design values determined with adequately calibrated ...

Explicit representation of uncertainties is essential to improve the reliability of seismic assessments of earthquake-damaged buildings, particularly when dealing with unreinforced masonry buildings. Modern inspection techniques use images for detecting an ...

In capacity-designed steel moment resisting frames (MRFs), inelastic deformations are mostly concentrated in the steel beams and the column fixed ends of the first story, while the participation of the panel zones in energy dissipation is limited. In such ...

Within the frame of the revision of the Eurocode 2 for concrete structures, the section devoted to strut-and-tie design has been up-dated to enhance its applicability, its consistency with other sections and its ease-of-use. As a result, a number of change ...

This paper presents the experimental results of two welded unreinforced flange-welded web (WUF-W) beam-to-column connections that defy the current design paradigm of prequalified welded connections. The proposed WUF-W connections feature customized beveled ...

An increasing number of existing steel structures are nowadays at the end of their service lives and most of them are subjected to fatigue loading. To tackle the fatigue problem, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have been proposed and succ ...

This paper presents the experimental results from nine full-scale concrete-filled double-skin tubular (CFDST) beam-columns. The test specimens exploited two fabrication strategies, featuring either hollow steel inner skins with corrugated geometry or ultra ...

In flat-slab frames, which are typically designed as secondary seismic structures, the shear failure of the slab around the column (punching failure) is typically the governing failure mode which limits the deformation capacity and can potentially lead to ...

Volume increase between the reactants and the products of alkali silica reaction could reach up to 100%. Taking place inside the aggregates, ASR imposes internal pressure on the surrounding material. In the current paper, we study the possibility of crack ...

An experimental investigation was conducted on the thermophysical and thermomechanical properties of phenolic-basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (P-BFRP) rebars subjected to high temperature. As a comparison, vinylBFRP (V-BFRP) and epoxy-BFRP (E-BFRP) rebars ...

Research conducted after the 1994 Northridge earthquake in the U.S. and the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan led to the development of today's pre-qualified beam-to-column connections for capacity-designed steel moment resisting frames (MRFs). Welded moment c ...

The compressive resistance of concrete in new structures is usually characterized on the basis of tests performed on concrete cylinders or cubes under relatively rapid loading conditions. Although efficient for material characterization, these tests do not ...

In concrete structures, opened cracks contribute significantly to the transfer of shear and normal stresses through the contact forces occurring between fractured surfaces. Such contact forces are due to protruding asperities, engaged by interlocking and f ...

This paper presents results from 21 large-scale experiments on steel columns that examined their collapse behavior as related to steel moment resisting frames (MRFs). The test specimens included wide-flange and square hollow structural shapes (HSS) and wer ...

High-permeance, molecular-sieving, nanoporous single-layer graphene (NSLG) membranes are highly promising for gas separation. However, the formation of cracks during the transfer of NSLG to a low-cost porous support is difficult to avoid. These cracks are ...

The design of reinforced concrete flat slabs can be governed at failure by punching shear close to concentrated loads or columns. Geometrical features, reinforcement layouts and in-plane forces provided by external vertical elements, such as shear walls, c ...

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials are currently being selected for the design of lightweight and efficient structural members in a wide number of engineering applications. Sandwich panels with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) face she ...

Previous studies have investigated the slab effects on the cyclic behavior of composite beams in moment-resisting frames. Of interest in this paper, is the slab contribution to the flexural strength and effective stiffness of the beam. The former influence ...

In the present research, the uniaxial compression behaviour of concrete under different strain rates is investigated. The investigation emphasises the influence of the strain rate on the development of inelastic deformations due to nonlinear creep for high ...
