The transition towards clean renewable energy sources, where wind and solar are prone to variation, requires adequate energy storage. Power-to-methane (PtM) systems can be part of the solution. Specifically, solid-oxide-electrolyser (SOE) based PtM systems ...

Affected by both future anthropogenic emissions and climate change, future prediction of PM2.5 and its Oxidative Potential (OP) distribution is a significant challenge, especially in developing countries like China. To overcome this challenge, we estimated ...

Isoprene is a key trace component of the atmosphere emitted by vegetation and other organisms. It is highly reactive and can impact atmospheric composition and climate by affecting the greenhouse gases ozone and methane and secondary organic aerosol format ...

Methanation of CO2 is an important reaction for reducing CO2 emissions in a power-to-gas system. Compared to cobalt supported on gamma-Al2O3, cobalt supported on graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) showed significantly better performance for CO2 methanation. Cob ...

The hydroxyl radical (OH) fuels atmospheric chemical cycling as the main sink for methane and a driver of the formation and loss of many air pollutants, but direct OH observations are sparse. We develop and evaluate an observation -based proxy for short -t ...

In this work, a systematic approach combining different energy solutions and the time-varying energy demands is used to identify the operating conditions and arrangements for industrial complexes. A kraft pulp mill integrated to an urban district heating n ...

Microbial life is widespread in the terrestrial subsurface and present down to several kilometers depth, but the energy sources that fuel metabolism in deep oligotrophic and anoxic environments remain unclear. In the deep crystalline bedrock of the Fennosc ...

To curb the severe effects of climate change, our society needs to radically reduce its CO2 footprint. For the heavy-duty sector, where electrification is difficult, alternative fuels can be the solution. Methane-fueled engines have lower energy-specific C ...

Methane abatement remains a challenge in aftertreatment systems of natural gas engines, currently under discussion in combination with synthetic methane. In this study, Pt/Rh and Pd/Rh-based three-way catalysts are investigated under various transient cond ...

Biogas-based power-to-X technology allows storing renewable electricity, while producing CO2-neutral products. This work investigates the conversion and upgrading of digestion-derived gas mixtures with focus on increasing the operational flexibility of the ...

Three different power-to-methane process chains with grid injection in two scales (1 MWel and 6 MWel) were analysed regarding their investment and operation cost. The process chains were based on biological or catalytic bubbling fluidised bed methanation i ...

Streams and rivers emit substantial amounts of nitrous oxide (N2O) and are therefore an essential component of global nitrogen (N) cycle. Permafrost soils store a large reservoir of dormant N that, upon thawing, can enter fluvial networks and partly degrad ...

Accumulation of methane in oxic waters of lakes and the ocean has been widely reported. Despite the importance for the greenhouse gas budget, mechanistic controls of such "methane paradox" remain elusive. Here, we use a combination of CH4 concentration and ...

Lost Hammer Spring, located in the High Arctic of Nunavut, Canada, is one of the coldest and saltiest terrestrial springs discovered to date. It perennially discharges anoxic (

Atmospheric methane is a potent greenhouse gas that plays a major role in controlling the Earth’s climate. The causes of the renewed increase of methane concentration since 2007 are uncertain given the multiple sources and complex biogeochemistry. Here, we ...

Direct methanation of biogas converts the CO2 in raw-biogas to methane, enabling higher methane yield and an elelctricity storage option via Power-to-Gas. As the thermodynamic equilibrium limits the methane yield, unreacted hydrogen has to be removed and r ...

Atmospheric non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) play an important role in the formation of secondary organic aerosols and ozone. After a multidecadal global decline in atmospheric mole fractions of ethane and propane – the most abundant atmospheric NMHCs – pr ...

Production of methane gas from the methane-hydrate-bearing layer below the deep-ocean floor is expected to be crucial in the future of energy resources worldwide. During the methane gas-production phase from the methane hydrate with the depressurisation me ...

The invention relates to a method for direct conversion of plastic materials into methane and/or liquid fuel and use of ruthenium-modified zeolite to catalyse this conversion. ...

The dynamics of methane generation and evasion from well-oxygenated, oligotrophic streams have been traditionally neglected. We estimated evasion of methane and assessed its sources and production pathways using a stable isotope approach in 16 oxygen-rich ...
