Bed joint reinforcement significantly affects the shear capacity of masonry walls due to its effective ability to transfer shear forces through a diagonal crack, but how does this phenomenon impact its drift capacity? This paper presents an experimental st ...

Francis turbines with medium or high specific speeds may experience a particular type of instability in the upper part load in which the precessing vortex has an elliptical shape. The occurrence of the upper part-load instability (UPLI) is accompanied by l ...

Recently, Jafarnejad, Franca, Pfister, and Schleiss [2017. Time-based failure analysis of compressed riverbank riprap. Journal of Hydraulic Research, 55(2), 224–235. doi: 10.1080/00221686.2016.1212940] presented an experimental study on the stability of co ...

We present an experimental study of the low-energy stereodynamics of the Ne(3P2)+N2 reaction. Supersonic expansions of the two reactants are superposed in a merged beam experiment, where individual velocity control of the two beams allows us to reach avera ...

This study investigates the effect of daylight transmitted through three coloured glazing types (blue, orange and neutral) on thermal responses and overall comfort, at three temperature levels (19 °C, 22 °C and 26 °C). The goal is threefold: (i) understand ...

Compliance of the body has a crucial role on locomotion performance. The levels and the distribution of compliance should be well tuned to obtain efficient gait. The leg stiffness changes significantly even during different phases of a single gait cycle. T ...

This paper investigates the problem of deriving a white box performance model of Hardware Transactional Memory (HTM) systems. The proposed model targets TSX, a popular implementation of HTM integrated in Intel processors starting with the Haswell family in ...

Computer model-based simulations have shown that rapid stimulation at 60-100% of atrial fibrillation cycle length (AFCL) from a ring of electrodes located around the septum may induce local capture in both atria for most AF dynamics. The present study aims ...

People performing actions together have a natural tendency to synchronize their behavior. Consistently, people doing a task together build internal representations not only of their actions and goals, but also of the other people performing the task. Howev ...

This thesis addresses the problem of a statistical description of the transport of sediment as bed load. It highlights the role of fluctuations arising during the transport process, and their impact on macroscopic averages. The results presented here are b ...

Among materials being introduced in the aerospace industry, the carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) have a place of privilege because of their exceptional stiffness-to-mass ratio. However, the polymer-based matrix is vulnerable to damages by environmen ...

This paper presents the results of a study on the exploitation of compliance in structures made of self-reconfigurable modular robots - Roombots. This research was driven by the following three hypotheses: (1) compliance can improve locomotion performance; ...
