Droplet microfluidics has revolutionized quantitative high-throughput bioassays and screening, especially in the field of single-cell analysis where applications include cell characterization, antibody discovery and directed evolution. However, droplet mic ...

Background: Although digital mobility outcomes (DMOs) can be readily calculated from real-world data collected with wearable devices and ad-hoc algorithms, technical validation is still required. The aim of this paper is to comparatively assess and validat ...

Coral reefs around the world are under threat from anomalous heat waves that are causing the widespread decline of hard corals. Different coral taxa are known to have different sensitivities to heat, although variation in susceptibilities have also been ob ...

Imaging methods to capture the beating and developing heart inside embryonic animal models such as the zebrafish are a key component for the study of fundamental biological processes such as cardiac birth defects or tissue regeneration. However, live heart ...

Non fungible tokens (NFTs) are used to define the ownership of digital assets. More recently, there has been a surge of platforms to auction digital art as well as other digital assets in form of image, video, and audio content of all sorts. Although NFTs ...

String sorting is a fundamental kernel of string matching and database index construction; yet, it has not been studied as extensively as fixed-length keys sorting. Because processing variable-length keys in hardware is challenging, it is no surprise that ...

Quantification of mobility is the key to monitor the progression of mobility disorders as well as the effect of an intervention. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) with dedicated algorithms can quantify postural transitions and gait as the two key aspects o ...

Methods of topological data analysis have been successfully applied in a wide range of fields to provide useful summaries of the structure of complex data sets in terms of topological descriptors, such as persistence diagrams. While there are many powerful ...

This thesis reports the use of metal-coated three-dimensional SU-8 electrodes for dielectrophoretic bio sensing and particle manipulation applications. Placing free standing three-dimensional electrodes in microfluidic channels, electric fields can be appl ...

A device for sorting biological entities is disclosed. The device comprises a channel to canalize the biological entities and a selector having slots to accommodate said entities. Means for detecting and analysing an optical parameter of the biological ent ...

In-Memory Computing (IMC) solutions, and particularly bitline computing in SRAM, appear promising as they mitigate one of the most energy consuming aspects in computation: data movement. In this work we propose a fast (2.4Ghz for bitwise operations and 2.4 ...

Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) is becoming widely available in data centers. This technology allows a process to directly read and write the memory of a remote host, with a mechanism to control access permissions. In this paper, we study the fundamenta ...

The efficiency of stochastic particle schemes for large scale simulations relies on the ability to preserve a uniform distribution of particles in the whole physical domain. While simple particle split and merge algorithms have been considered previously, ...

Humans are comparison machines: comparing and choosing an item among a set of alternatives (such as objects or concepts) is arguably one of the most natural ways for us to express our preferences and opinions. In many applications, the analysis of data con ...

Many modern services need to routinely perform tasks on a large scale. This prompts us to consider the following question: How can we design efficient algorithms for large-scale computation? In this thesis, we focus on devising a general strategy to addr ...

We address the problem of learning a ranking by using adaptively chosen pairwise comparisons. Our goal is to recover the ranking accurately but to sample the comparisons sparingly. If all comparison outcomes are consistent with the ranking, the optimal sol ...

We developed a method for the fast sorting and selection of mammalian cells expressing and secreting a protein at high levels. This procedure relies on cell capture using an automated microfluidic device handling antibody-coupled magnetic microparticles an ...

Log-structured merge (LSM) data stores enable to store and process large volumes of data while maintaining good performance. They mitigate the I/O bottleneck by absorbing updates in a memory layer and transferring them to the disk layer in sequential batch ...

In modern automated assembly lines, part feeders play an important role to separate and sort parts. Agility and flexibility are required to achieve a good yield for different types of parts. The common working principle is to vibrate a working plate driven ...

In recent years, neural network accelerators have been shown to achieve both high energy efficiency and high performance for a broad application scope within the important category of recognition and mining applications. Still, both the energy efficiency a ...
