Establishing the scalability of a concurrent algorithm a priori, before implementing and evaluating it on a concrete multi-core platform, seems difficult, if not impossible. In the context of search data structures however, according to all practical work ...

A priori, locking seems easy: To protect shared data from concurrent accesses, it is sufficient to lock before accessing the data and unlock after. Nevertheless, making locking efficient requires fine-tuning (a) the granularity of locks and (b) the locking ...

In concurrent systems without automatic garbage collection, it is challenging to determine when it is safe to reclaim memory, especially for lock-free data structures. Existing concurrent memory reclamation schemes are either fast but do not tolerate proce ...

We introduce OPTIK, a new practical design pattern for designing and implementing fast and scalable concurrent data structures. OPTIK relies on the commonly-used technique of version numbers for detecting conflicting concurrent operations. We show how to i ...

Deploying remote laboratories at a large scale is the next challenge in remote experimentation. It is referred as Massive Open Online Labs (MOOLs). Being able to sustain a massive number of users accessing a specific resource concurrently is a complex task ...

The shift of commodity hardware from single- to multi-core processors in the early 2000s compelled software developers to take advantage of the available parallelism of multi-cores. Unfortunately, only few---so-called embarrassingly parallel---applications ...

Locks are a natural place for improving the energy efficiency of software systems. First, concurrent systems are mainstream and when their threads synchronize, they typically do it with locks. Second, locks are well-defined abstractions, hence changing the ...

Concurrency bugs are at the heart of some of the worst bugs that plague software. Concurrency bugs slow down software development because it can take weeks or even months before developers can identify and fix them. In-production detection, root cause ...

The analysis of the trace graphs generated by dataflow program executions has been shown to be an effective tool for exploring and optimizing the design space of application programs on manycore/multicore platforms. In this work a new approach aiming at fi ...

The increased number of cores integrated on a chip has brought about a number of challenges. Concerns about the scalability of cache coherence protocols have urged both researchers and practitioners to explore alternative programming models, where cache co ...

The correctness of a shared object, which can be accessed by several processes concurrently, is specified through two different kinds of properties - safety and liveness. When implementing a shared object it is important to specify its correctness in a suc ...
