The faithful bidirectional quantum coherent conversion of microwave (5 GHz) and optical (193.5 THz) quantum states will become essential for future quantum networks. Due to their low transition frequency, qubit states are quickly destroyed at room temperat ...

Crystal phase engineering is an exciting pathway to enhance the properties of conventional semiconductors. Metastable SiGe presents a direct band gap well suited for optical devices whereas wurtzite (WZ) phosphide alloys enable efficient light emission in ...

Using vertex-corrected quasiparticle self-consistent GW schemes, we address the electronic structure of two manganese dioxide polymorphs, α-MnO2 and β-MnO2. In particular, we determine the fundamental band gaps, macroscopic dielectric constants, magnetic m ...

The ability to control and manipulate light is a fundamental aspect that is at the very core of the development of integrated photonic circuits. It is desirable to achieve such control down to a scale that is comparable to or smaller than the wavelength of ...

It is in the context of miniaturization that arises the microfluidics concept. It is not uncommon in chemical, biological or medical analysis laboratories to manipulate or to mix fluids while measuring the results with filters, spectrometers or all other e ...

We report an optical switch based on a diffraction grating by combining PDMS microstructures with a photo-responsive Nematic Liquid Crystal (NLC). The grating was realized via replica molding and was subsequently coated with a thin SiO layer. SiO induced a ...

The main topic of this thesis is the fabrication and characterization of structures smaller than the wavelength of light, for operation in the visible or near infrared spectral range. In the first part of this thesis, the fabrication of periodic structures ...

We demonstrate integrated optical continuous-travelling-wave parametric amplifiers that significantly surpass the amplification bandwidth of traditional Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers. Using a 5.55-cm-long integrated gallium phosphide waveguide, we achieve ...

Photonic crystals are stuctures in which the refractive index varies periodically on the wavelength scale in one, two or three dimensions. Due to interference effects, these structures can forbid light propagation over a large spectral range called "the ph ...

Integrated quantum photonics leverages the on-chip generation of nonclassical states of light to realize key functionalities of quantum devices. Typically, the generation of such nonclassical states relies on whispering gallery mode resonators, such as int ...

The invention of the laser in the 1960s heralded a new era in photonics. Owing to both, academic and industrial research, photonics technologies have long become part of our everyday life. This PhD thesis explores two subfields of laser technologies: Frequ ...

In this work, we provide important parameters to take into account when fabricating in-plane III-V photodetectors (PDs) integrated on silicon (Si) using template-assisted selective epitaxy (TASE). Their performance has previously been demonstrated, and her ...

Photonic crystals are periodic dielectric structures, where the periodicity varies in one, two or three dimensions. Analogous to the periodic potential of electrons in semiconductors, the periodic variation of the dielectric constant influences the electro ...

Phase imaging is widely used in biomedical imaging, sensing, and material characterization, among other fields. However, direct imaging of phase objects with subwavelength resolution remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate subwavelength imaging of phase ...

Recently there has been a growing amount of attention devoted to tuneable photonic crystals (PhCs) where the optical response of PhC structures can be dynamically modified. We will show how infiltrating planar PhCs with a synthetic organic material allows ...

The utilization of MHPs in optoelectronics has surged over the past decade due to their favorable properties such as direct band gaps, a large JDOS near the band edge resulting in strong optical absorption, and high defect tolerance allowing operation clos ...

Optical resonators enable the generation, manipulation, and storage of electromagnetic waves. The physics underlying their operation is determined by the interference of electromagnetic waves, giving rise to the resonance spectrum. This mechanism causes th ...

On-chip nanoscale optical platforms capable of efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) are highly desired for optical sensing, subwavelength coherent sources, and quantum photonic devices. Here, we develop a remotely excited dual cavity resonance scheme ...

Thermal motion of a room-temperature mechanical resonator typically dominates the quantum backaction of its position measurement. This is a longstanding barrier for exploring cavity optomechanics at room temperature. In order to enter the quantum regime of ...

Difference-frequency generation (DFG) is elemental for nonlinear parametric processes such as optical parametric oscillation and is instrumental for generating coherent light at long wavelengths, especially in the middle infrared. Second-order nonlinear fr ...
