Operators from various industries have been pushing the adoption of wireless sensing nodes for industrial monitoring, and such efforts have produced sizeable condition monitoring datasets that can be used to build diagnosis algorithms capable of warning ma ...

One major challenge in distributed learning is to efficiently learn for each client when the data across clients is heterogeneous or non iid (not independent or identically distributed). This provides a significant challenge as the data of the other client ...

Metadata-private messaging designs that scale to support millions of users are rigid: they limit users to a single device that is online all the time and transmits on short regular intervals, and require users to choose precisely when each of their buddies ...

Utilization of edge devices has exploded in the last decade, with such use cases as wearable devices, autonomous driving, and smart homes. As their ubiquity grows, so do expectations of their capabilities. Simultaneously, their formfactor and use cases lim ...

Federated Averaging (FEDAVG) has emerged as the algorithm of choice for federated learning due to its simplicity and low communication cost. However, in spite of recent research efforts, its performance is not fully understood. We obtain tight convergence ...

Recent advances in remote sensing and actuation technologies, coupled with the large reach of the internet, allowed for the emergence of applications such as cyber-physical labs. Cyber-physical labs are the digital and remotely-accessible equivalent of the ...

In this paper we present a new approach to implementing causal consistency in geo-replicated data stores, which we call Optimistic Causal Consistency (OCC). The optimism in our approach lies in that updates from a remote data center are immediately made vi ...

We present a first study where we combine two asymetric virtual reality systems for telecollaboration purposes: a CAVE system and a head-mounted display (HMD), using a server-client type architecture. Experiments on a puzzle game in limited time, alone and ...

In this paper, we present and analyze an event distribution system for brain-computer interfaces. Events are commonly used to mark and describe incidents during an experiment and are therefore critical for later data analysis or immediate real-time process ...

HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) permits to efficiently deliver video to multiple heterogenous users in a fully distributed way. This might however lead to unfair bandwidth utilization among HAS users. Therefore, network-assisted HAS systems have been propose ...

BIP is a component-based framework for system design that has important industrial applications. BIP is built on three pillars: behavior, interaction, and priority. In this paper, we introduce first-order interaction logic (FOIL) that extends BIP to system ...

The need for automation of the identity recognition process for a vast number of applications resulted in great advancement of biometric systems in the recent years. Yet, many studies indicate that these systems suffer from vulnerabilities to spoofing (pre ...

The Internet of Things market is experiencing a period of intense growth. From 7 to 10 billion of connected devices in 2013, it is expected to reach 26 to 30 billion in 2020. Smart buildings represent between 2 to 21% of this market. Indeed, the possibilit ...

This paper presents the Smart Device specification to interface with remote labs. To encourage the broader sharing of remote labs, the Smart Device paradigm decouples the client from the server and provides well-defined interfaces between client and server ...

Smart sensors, such as smart meters or smart phones, are nowadays ubiquitous. To be "smart", however, they need to process their input data with limited storage and computational resources. In this paper, we convert the stream of sensor data into a stream ...

IEEE C37.118 is the current standard for synchrophasor measurements in power systems. It defines the measurement method and communication protocols for the entities in a synchrophasor network. The standard offers two different modes for client-server commu ...

Internet, users often need to assume, by default, that their every statement or action online is monitored and tracked. The Dissent project at Yale University takes a collective approach to online anonymity, based on different algorithmic foundations from ...

We consider an interactive multiview video streaming (IMVS) system where clients select their preferred viewpoint in a given navigation window. To provide high quality IMVS, many high quality views should be transmitted to the clients. However, this is not ...

Remote laboratories are software and hardware tools that allow students to remotely access real equipment located in universities. The integration of remote laboratories in learning tools (learning management systems, content man- agement systems, or perso ...

A method to optimize the communication on a channel between an access point and at least one client device, said channel being characterized by a center frequency and a bandwidth, comprises: establishing a connection on a first channel according to a first ...
